LSU Eunice held graduation ceremonies Friday in the newly named Mumphrey Center that practiced social distancing.
Morning and afternoon ceremonies were held to reduce the size of each crowd.
Chancellor Nancee Sorenson said LSUE showed the LSU system in August how to conduct an in-person ceremony.
In her commencement address, Sorenson noted, “It has been a very interesting year” as COVID-19 precautions ruled life on and off campus.
Sorenson said it is a year everyone will learn from. “We will never go back to the way that we were,” she said
And, the COVID-19 experiences are historic.
She recalled her parents talking about Great Depression experiences and people alive now will recall their pandemic times far into the future.
From kindergarten students on up, the experiences coping with the pandemic have been new.
For instance, people have learned they can work at home, she said.
“It has been an amazing experience. So, it will be with us for many, many years. I think there are going to be many silver linings in this,” she said.
Sorenson said there are universal truths for the graduates.
“First, life is not easy. It is not supposed to be easy,” she said.
“The real test of humanity is not when everything is perfect. The test of our humanity, of our strength, is when things are challenging,” she said.
Sorenson queestioned the concept of “unbelievable” in the face of the pandemic reality.
“We should never expect that anything would be unbelievable,” she said.
“When people are involved, we should expect almost anyting to happen and that anything and everything will happen,” she said.
Sorenson also stressed the need to feel joy. Joy is the pure pleaasure in enjoying everything you do, she said.
Finally, she said, “We all need to define success for ourselves.”
Sorenson also addresssed personal expectations “I never went to college thinking I would be a chancellor or the president of a college ... there is no major for that, but what I did know is I wanted to do more.”
