McGovern takes oath as St. Landry assessor

Sherri Zeringue McGovern recited her oath of office in the front of the St. Landry Parish Courthouse on Thursday.
McGovern thanked her predecessor Rhyn Duplechain, who was present, for his 34 years of service as assessor.
McGovern has been working with Duplechain for the past year as she obtained her certification and transition into office. Duplechain is staying on the job until the end of the year.
McGovern said she was elected 395 days ago, but state law prevented her from taking office during a reassessment year.
She will officially take the office on Jan. 1.
McGovern’s addressed the crowd that included state and parish officials and primarily thanked her family for their support.
She pledged to lead the office with integrity, dignity and humility. She also promised fair and equitable assessments and work with business to promote economic growth.
In November 2019, McGovern defeated Blair Briggs to win election.
McGovern won 60% of the 28,853 votes cast in the election.
McGovern took 41% of the vote in the Oct. 12 primary followed by Briggs with 33% and Garett Duplechain, with 26%.
McGovern is a certified public accountant and has headed the sales tax collection office for the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office.
