St. Landry Parish property assessments rise 8.23%

St. Landry Parish property assessments from 2016 to 2020 increased 8.23%, according to information from St. Landry Parish Assessor Rhyn Duplechain.
The parish’s total assessed value in 2020 is $821,181,890, a $62,412,820 increase from the value in 2016.
Duplechain, who is in his final year as assessor in St. Landry Parish, said the reassessment period was from July 2018 to June 2019.
Duplechain’s term ends on Dec. 31 and Sherri Zeringue McGovern, elected in 2019, will take office in January.
Property is assessed every four years.
Due to the coronavirus, Duplechain business property valuations were adjusted down by 6%.
Duplechain stressed that property values are steady in St. Landry Parish. The parish has some of the lowest property tax rates in the state and ranks near the bottom in property taxes, he said.
Ten of the 12 municipalities in the parish collect property taxes. Leonville and Cankton do not assess a property tax.
Assessments for the 10 municipalities and the change from 2016 are:
Arnaudville, $6,589,230, 8.1% increase.
Eunice, $65,717,380, 7.36% increase
Grand Coteau, $6,156,420, 10.28% increase.
Krotz Springs, $37,498,600, 18.96% increase.
Melville, $2,979,340, 1.77% increase.
Opelousas, $148,260,100, 7.19% increase.
Palmetto, $880,880, 1.22% increase.
Port Barre, $15,163,560, 24.07% increase.
Sunset, $25,506,680, 13.51% increase.
Washington, $4,411,080, 0.43% increase.
Total property taxes for the parish in 2020 are $46,281,793, up 3.25% from 2016.
The parish has 46,181 property taxpayers
In Eunice, there are 5,100 property taxpayers.
