Letters to the Editor

Good government at work

Editor, The Eunice News:
The members of our city government deserve praise for a job well done.
In May, I wrote a letter to the editor outlining the improvements needed at Circle Park.
In June, I spoke at the City Council meeting. Mayor Morris was very supportive and took immediate action to resolve the issue.
The morning after the meeting, he and I spoke on the phone and he assigned Brian Joiner to oversee the park project.
I am delighted to report that the park has been completely restored. All of the entrance gates are fixed, the broken see-saw has been removed, and two baby swings, a water fountain, and a porta-potty have been installed.
On behalf of the children of Eunice, I would like to thank Brian Joiner, Tommy Barrow, Trish Johnson, and anyone else who worked on the park project.
I especially thank Mayor Morris for recognizing the importance of updating the park and for following through on the commitment he made at the June council meeting.
Government is not supposed to be about money, policies, or personal vendettas. When it works as it is meant to, government is about serving people.
The Circle Park restoration project is a wonderful example of good government at work.

Out of parish? No thanks
I have great respect for one who volunteers for election to public office and I have greater respect for those who volunteer for any board or commission in this parish.
The Solid Waste Commission members are not new comers to this parish. They are products of this parish. They should adhere to the will of the taxpayers and voters of this community. They are the representation and should understand that the will of the people rules. No matter what and how tempting - keep St. Landry first.
From all indications the majority of residents are not in favor of the latest “buzz” by IESI wanting to bid for the keys of the landfill. The answer to that “buzz or proposal” by IESI should be a final and resounding absolutely no!!!
It is not the business of the Solid Waste Commission to get involved in the operation of IESI. I equate the contract IESI has with the Commission to that of the legislators who knew the situation when they were elected, then wanted a pay raise.
Don’t ask for anything that will affect the state, and in this case St. Landry Parish. IESI has fallen into a PPP situation (poor prior planning) and is looking for a bail out.
After reviewing their guidelines, understanding their limitations and listening to the tax payers, I am certain the Commission members will return with a unanimous reply to IESI, “sorry - St. Landry Parish is not for sale, rent, lease or loan. This includes your plans to locate a compacting sub-station and or transfer point which would add to a health hazard. Certainly you have a plan B. On behalf of the citizens of St. Landry Parish your request is denied - case closed.”
With that said, the Commission will have made the citizens of the entire parish proud. My advice to all concerned - let’s stop plotting and start planning. St. Landry Parish is teetering on greatness - let’s all be part of the major plan.
A very special note: had it not been for the untimely death of a man who loved this parish, Alan Brasseaux of the Solid Waste Commission, we would not be having this conversation.
