The Eunice branch of the Opelousas-St. Landry Bank and Trust Co. has opened in its new quarters at Second and Walnut. The modern building is one of the best in the city. M.M. Milburn is manager.

Lots have been purchased in Opelousas for construction of the T.H. Harris Trade School opposite the high school, according to School Supt. W.T. Prescott.

Father A. Martel, pastor of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, has completed his 25th year as a priest. A surprise banquet marked the occasion. Mrs. Murphy Guillory served as chairperson.

The tennis court being built behind the Boy Scout Hut will soon be ready for use, according to Vivian Launey, recreation chair person. Ping pong, bingo and croquet have been added to games available at the center.

Dr. Weston P. Miller has returned from a four-weeks course at Mayo Brothers Clinic, Rochester, Minn. He has practiced in Eunice for many years.

An improvement project for the City Park has been endorsed by the State Planning Commission. J. Lester White said the grant would be for about $9,600. D.E. Young is the park’s biggest promoter. The site is located along the Basile highway, two miles from the city. A golf course is planned as is a lake.

Jesse M. Carlton, Jr. has graduated from LSU with his master’s degree and accepted an instructor’s position at the University of Alabama.

Girl Scouts have returned from a six-day encampment at Shady Nook near Alexandria. Attending were Dorothy Bourgeois, Irene Lejeune, Jean Rougeau, Denise DeJean, Mercedes DeRouen, Gloria Andrus, Mildred Aguillard, Myrtle Young, Juanita Williams and Marie Louise Duplechin.

Construction on the new 6,000-acre Chicot State Park, including a 2,500-acre lake, will begin this month. A Civilian Conservation Corps camp has been constructed to house the workers.

Postmaster Rene Tate has received blueprints for an $80,000 Post Office building. The one-story facility will be at Third & Laurel on property formerly occupied by Central Hardware and George Stagg.

New teachers this fall at Eunice High will be Floyd Andrus, Mrs. Elvin B. Brand, Francis A. Patin and Elizabeth Powers.

The 10.5 inches of rain on Aug. 15 was the greatest 24-hour downpour in Euncice as far back as records go - to 1926. The rain came from a fizzling tropical storm.

Property owners will vote next month on a proposition to provide a new natural gas distribution system and extend present mains. The revenue bonds would be in the amount of $65,000, with the federal government adding another $45,000, according to Mayor J.B. Lewis.
