EUNICE-Funeral services for Mrs. Bettye Jean Grant Thomas, 86, will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Eunice with the visitation observed from 9 a.m. until service time at Owens-Thomas Funeral Home in Eunice.
Ivy Beyond Wall Ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the rosary immediately following. Burial will be in St. Mathilda Catholic Church Cemetery. Father Hampton Davis, III will officiate the funeral mass.
Bettye was an esteemed educator retiring after 32 years of service. Throughout her tenure she served as a Business Education instructor at Carter G. Woodson School and Lawtell High School (post-integration), an English Teacher at Eunice Junior High School, ending her career with increased responsibility as head of the English department. Common sentiments expressed by peers and students alike include her trustworthy mentorship, her unwavering willingness to help others and her stylish attire.
Bettye’s baking is known far and wide, as you could always depend on a cake, pecan candy or jam being ready for any visitor, even without advanced notice. The love she put into her baked goods is impossible to replicate. Her kindness extended to all in her presence. Every visitor during Christmas season left with sweets and a gift to open.
On Saturday, March 12, 2022, the Angels of the Lord escorted Bettye from her earthy abode to her eternal home.
Filled with empty wells of loneliness will be her children: Deldeirdra Thomas (Raymond) Webb of Baton Rouge, Iyon Thomas (Fred) Singleton of Pflugerville, Texas; Alvin J. Thomas, Jr. and Juan C. (Gail) Thomas both of Eunice, one sister: Loyce Grant (Juan, Sr.) Starks of Springfield, MO; one brother: Snowden (Henrietta) Grant of Lafayette, 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Alvin Thomas, Sr.; her parents: Lee and Doris Grant; and her sisters: Eloise Stamps and Rose Booker.
Owens-Thomas Funeral Home of Eunice is in charge of arrangements.
