Bengals begin with strong showing

The second-ranked LSU Eunice baseball team opened the 2017 season with a 12-2, 11-5, 11-1 sweep over North Lake College.
LSUE will entertain Southwest Tennessee Community College in a four-game series beginning 6 p.m. Thursday.
Bo Myers (Zachary) went 4-for-6 in two games against North Lake with seven RBI and a home run.
Michael Claverie (Live Oak)went 6-for-12 with five RBI and a home run in three games.
Hunter Feduccia (Barbe) went 4-for-8 with five RBI and a home run in three games.
Gavin Bourgeois (Notre Dame) Micah McHugh (Zachary) and Cameron Horton (Benton) also hit home runs against North Lake.
As a team, the Bengals hit. 404 with eight doubles, six home runs and 33 RBI over the first three games.
LSUE stole 14-of-16 bases over the series, aided by a 3-for-3 performance by Braden Comeaux (Barbe).
The Bengals sent nine pitchers to the mound against the Blazers with Braxton Smith, Zach Hester, and Michael Brawner all earning wins.
Smith (Orangefield) struck out six, walked two and allowed three hits over four innings in Friday’s 12-2 season opening win.
Hester (Vidor) did not allow a run on Saturday as he struck out seven, walked one and scattered three hits over four innings.
Brawner (St. Joseph) fanned eight and allowed one earned run on three hits over four innings Sunday.
Brian Metoyer, Josh Taylor, Richard Hebert, Brent Hebert, Ridge Heisler and Justin Barton also saw action over the weekend as the Bengals limited North Lake to four earned runs on 17 hits.
Southwest Tennessee Community College is from Millington, Tennesse and the Saluquis play its home games at USA Stadium – the site where LSUE won its first two NJCAA Division II national championships in 2006 and 2008.
The Bengals opened the 2008 season with a three-game sweep over Southwest Tennessee, 5-3, 6-0, 7-2.
