The basketball game between the Eunice High Bobcats and the Crowley High Gents came down to the wire in non-district action Tuesday evening at the Bobcat gym.
The Bobcats trailed the Gents for most of the game before taking a 50-49 lead with 44 seconds remaining on the clock.
Crowley’s Davon Nickson was fouled and went to the free-throw line, but managed to make just one of two from the line to tie the game at 50-50.
The two teams exchanged turnovers before the Bobcats gained control of the basketball on a travel call with five seconds left on the clock and the Cats possessing the ball just over midcourt.
Coach Andrepont called for a timeout and set up a play which he hoped would end the game.
With both teams gathered near the Bobcats’ goal, Bobcat guard Georrein Dupre lofted the ball toward Dashawn Vigers.
Vigers grabbed the ball in the air and banked it off the glass and into the goal as the clock expired, giving the Bobcats a 52-50 victory.
“Our players pretty much did it the way we had drawn it up”, said head coach Chad Andrepont.
“It was a great pass from Georrein and a great grab and shot by Dashawn. I was just glad we didn’t have to go into overtime.”
Crowley got off to a quick start, holding a 12-4 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
The Bobcats would battle back to pull within 16-15 with three minutes left in the first half, but the Gents outscored the Cats 9-4 to hold a 27-19 halftime lead.
The Cats began to cut into the Gents’ lead in the final three minutes of the third quarter, pulling within six points at 46-40 as the third quarter ended.
The Cats slowly trimmed the Crowley lead to 49-48 when Brandon Ndubueze rebounded a missed shot and put it the basket. That set up the wild finish.
Malik Poullard and Ndubueze topped the Bobcats in scoring with 12 points apiece.
Dupre added 11 points for the Cats. Other scorers included Dylan Miller with six, Dashawn Vigers, with four, and Avery Lee with three. Carlin Vigers and Keithan Monday had two points apiece.
Travon Nickson led the scoring for Crowley with 14 points. Davon Nickson finished with nine points, while Jacoby Byers and Josh Burnett added eight apiece.

The Eunice High Lady Bobcats fell behind in the first half and could never recover as they dropped a 61-39 decision to the Cecilia High Lady Bulldogs in non-district basketball action Tuesday evening at the Eunice High gym.
The Lady Cats trailed by only a 13-7 margin after the first quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs slowly began to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Cats by a 15-8 by the end of the quarter to hold a 28-15 halftime advantage. Stacie White scored 11 points in the first half to lead the Eunice scoring at the half.
The Lady Cats managed to close the gap to ten points at 35-25 during the third quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs scored the final four points of the quarter to hold a 39-25 edge heading into the final quarter. Shania Toussaint had five points to lead the Lady Cats in the third quarter.
Leah Walker added a 3-point goal for the Lady Cats in the quarter.
White drove for a basket to open the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 39-28. But Cecilia’s Macy Boyd hit a driving layup just seconds later to give Cecilia a 41-28 advantage.
The Lady Cats would never get any closer as the Lady Bulldogs went on a 20-11 run to end the quarter and earn the victory by a 61-39 score.
White led the scoring for the Lady Cats with 19 points. Toussaint added eight points, Walker had seven, and Shania Malveaux chipped in with five points for the Lady Cats, who dropped to 1-8 on the season.
Nia Fontenot led Cecilia in scoring with 21 points. Cardel Batiste also hit the double-digit mark with 10 points.
