Lady Jays travel to No. 8 Ascension Christian

St. Edmund travels to No. 8 Ascension Christian (13-13) at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Gonzales for a Select Division IV regional round contest.
No. 9 St. Edmund (9-17) received a first-round bye as the Lady Jays have earned a playoff spot three of the last four seasons.
The Lady Jays have gone to the playoffs six times in seven years under the direction of head coach Erica Zaunbrecher.
With a victory, the Lady Jays would face either e No. 1 Houma Christian (23-7), No. 17 St. Frederick (3-22) or No. 16 False River (7-17) winner in the quarterfinals.
“The team is working hard daily to improve,” Zaunbrecher said. “They continue to motivate each other to be the best player each one can be.
“They are really coming together at the best time of the year,” she added.
This is the first year the LHSAA has divided the basketball playoffs into the Select and Non-Select brackets.
Last season, No. 5 Vermilion Catholic grabbed a 57-34 win over the No. 28 Lady Jays in the first round.
St. Edmund did not make the playoffs in 2015 after a 2-19 finish.
In 2014, the No. 28 Lady Jays fell 91-36 at No. 5 Arcadia in the opening round.
The last time the Lady Jays won a playoff game was in 2013 as St. Edmund advanced to the state quarterfinals.
No. 10 St. Ed’s beat No, 23 Block 54-50 in the first round then stunned No. 7 Arcadia 53-48 in the regionals.
No. 2 Vermilion Catholic then ended the Lady Jays’ run, 67-40 in the Class 1-A quarterfinals.
In 2012, No. 13 East Iberville earned a 48-41 win over No. 20 St. Edmund.
In Zaunbrecher’s first season as the Lady Jays head coach. No. 15 SEH lost 45-34 to No. 18 Varnado in 2011.

Iota 70, Lutcher 39
IOTA – The No. 2 Lady Bulldogs opened with a 22-2 first quarter run as Iota cruised to a 70-39 win over No. 31 Lutcher in the opening round of the Class 3-A basketball playoffs.
The Lady Bulldogs (26-6) will travel to Shreveport Monday to face No. 18 B.T. Washington, who downed No. 15 Northwest, 47-34.
Iota took a 28-12 lead into the second period ,sparked by 17 points from Avery Wriborg who drilled four treys in the quarter,
Madeline Gatte added six points in the period for the Lady Dogs.
Iota outscored Lutcher 22-10 in the second quarter to move ahead 50-22 at intermission.
Wriberg added two more treys, while Gatte chipped in eight points and Whitney Landry added seven points.
Iota went on a 12-7 run in the third period, aided by five points from Gatte and another three-pointer by Wriborg as the Lady Bulldogs led, 62-29.
Lutcher (15-16) outscored the Lady Bulldogs 10-8 in the fourth quarter, but Iota finished with a 31-point win.
Wriborg hit her eighth trey in the final period to finish with 30 points.
Gatte finished with 21 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds.
Landry contributed 13 points for Iota.
Emily Harrell finished with 14 points to lead Lutcher.
Last season, top-ranked Iota advanced to the semifnals with wins over Marksville (80-44), Iowa (65-42) and Madison (70-48 before falling to No. 4 Parkview Baptist (59-45).
Against Northwest, Booker T. Washington opened witth an 11-8 run and pushed ahead, 22-15 at the break.
The Lady Lions moved further ahead, winning an 11-4 third period battle.
With a 33-19 lead, BTW held off Northwest’s 15-14 fourth quarter to seal the 47-34 win.
Northwest’s Alexia Rubin, Khahli Malone and Jelessa Duffy all scored seven points.
Booke T. Washington was led by Briana Morris’ 15 points, while Latara Smith chipped in 13 and Kardeha Gay added 11 points.

Mamou 60, SPHS 49
MAMOU – The No. 8 Mamou Lady Demons earned a 60-49 Class 2-A bi-district playoff win over the South Plaquemines Lady Hurricanes as
​It was the first playoff victory for new head coach Denetra Allison Lewis as the Lady Demons will face No. 9 Lakeview on Monday.
Lakeview rolled to a 79-29 win over No. 24 Springfield.
​At intermission, Mamou led 32-11 as the Lady Demons’ full-court press forced several turnovers, including three steals on the South Plaquemine half of the court that led directly to lay-ups.
South Plaquemines went on a 12-4 run to close out the third quarter and with 1:38 left to play, the Lady Hurricanes had cut the lead down to just seven points, 54-47.
But South Plaquemine was forced to foul and the Lady Demons were able sink their free throws to put the game away.
Braylin Charles led the Lady Demons with 14 points.
Ka’zhana Richard netted 12 points, while Darelzray Bellard and Kiajah Wilson each chipped in 11 points.
​South Plaquemine’s senior guard Cantasia Smith scored 27 points.

Basile 64, CHS 39
CENTERVILLE – The No. 17 Basile Lady Bearcats rolled to a 64-39 win over the No. 16 Centerville Lady Bulldogs in the opening round of the Class 1A state playoffs.
Basile opened the game with an 8-0 run.
Kathryn Giles nailed two treys to open the game and scored eight more points in the quarter.
NeDasia Adams chipped in eight points to help the Lady Cats grab a 24-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Bearcats scored 11 second-period points as Adams pushed in six and Gracie Fournet added five points as Basile led 35-12 at the break.
The Bearcats went on a 23-13 run in the third period, sparked by 12 points from Adams.
Basile held a 58-25 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
With the Lady Cats’ bench cleared, Basile scored six points in the final period, while the Lady Bulldogs scored 14 to close the final margin to 25 points.
Adams led Basile with 28 points including six of six from the free throw line.
Giles pumped in 17 points including four treys.
Basile (13-16) will face No. 1 Arcadia at home 6 p.m. Monday.
Arcadia earned a 47-17 win over No. 32 Northwood–Lena.
