PRAIRIE BASSE – Weather permitting, the Eunice Lady Cats will begin the softball season on Saturday at the St. Landry Parish jamboree set for Beau Chene High School’s athletic complex.

The varsity will face host Beau Chene at 11:15 a.m. and will take on Westmimster Christian Academy at 1:45 p.m.

“We are looking forward to the start of the season,” first-year head softball coach Misty Guillory said. “It is a good thing to play against local competition, girls they have known their whole lives.”

The varsity jamboree begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday when Port Barre takes on Westminster.

After the Eunice - Beau Chene game, Port Barre will face Northwest at 12:30 p.m.

After the WCA - EHS contest, the jamboree concludes with the host Lady Gators facing Opelousas High at 3 p.m.

“I want them to gain some confidence,” the coach said. “I want them to see a variety of pitchers so we can work on our hitting.”

“I want to see who goes where in the shuffle,” Guillory said. “This will be our first real game setting with our whole team.

“It will be a test to see who can and who can’t as we make our line-up.”

The junior varsity will play Thursday and Friday

“I have so many young girls who are quality athletes that the bulk of my team is sophomores and juniors with just three seniors,” she said.

“We may struggle early because we are so young, but we should grow. I think we are progressing okay.”

The Lady Cats junior varsity begins jamboree play at 7 p.m. tonight against Port Barre.

They will face the WCA J.V. at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
