Louisiana State Police Trooper Mark Dennis said the accident apparently occurred around 5 a.m. Sunday morning on U.S. Highway 80 at milepost 165 in Madison Parish.
A 2002 Pontiac Grand Am was traveling westbound when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle ran off the left side of the road and entered a ditch, Dennis said. The Pontiac then struck a tree and came to rest.
The driver, identified as 22-year-old Milton E. Jones Jr. of Delhi, and his passenger, identified as 22-year-old Christopher D. Dunn of Delhi were both pronounced dead at the scene by the Madison Parish Coroner’s Office.
They were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, Dennis said. He added that routine toxicology tests are pending.
In 2008, Louisiana State Police Troop F Troopers have investigated 41 fatal crashes resulting in 46 deaths.
