Aldermen OK 6-year plan for airport

A six-year, $3.4 million plan for improvements at the Eunice Airport was approved by the Board of Aldermen at a meeting Tuesday. 
Drew Miller, airport manager, said, “Basically, when we do this the city of Eunice really doesn’t put up anything. It is all state and federal monies.”
Aldermen also approved a new 1,200-square-foot terminal building as substantially complete. The $336,000 building was paid for through a state Department of Transportation and Development aviation grant. 
The funding included paving and utility work at the airport.

Aldermen OK $100,000 boost in drainage funds

The Eunice Board of Aldermen approved an additional $100,000 in the city budget for drainage work at a special meeting on Monday.
The Board had budgeted $50,000 for drainage work this year, Mayor Scott Fontenot said on Tuesday.
“We are going to target every ward ... and see if we can help some of these people with drainage issues,” he said.
“We’ve been working on this since last August and we just want to get aggressive and try to alleviate all of the problems we have around town,” he said.

City meeting today is fill vacant Board seat

A Ward 4 alderman is to be appointed at a special meeting of the Eunice mayor and Board of Aldermen at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Eunice Municipal Complex.
Earlier this month, Alderman Dale Solieau announced his resignation at the Aug. 8 Board meeting.
A letter from the secretary of state dated Aug. 14 stated the governing authority has 20 days to make an appointment to fill the vacancy.
Mayor Scott Fontenot said an election will not be held to fill the vacancy.
The next regular municipal election is in 2018.

Soileau resigns city seat

Dale Soileau, Ward 4 alderman, announced at the end of Tuesday’s Board meeting that he had turned in his resignation on Aug. 3.
Soileau said he is moving into his late mother’s house about three miles outside the city limits.
“I thought I was going to continue my term and maybe run again, but she always had a wish that somebody in the family would live in her house. After thinking about it hard and losing a lot of sleep I decided I would do it,” he said.
“This past Saturday I moved in,” he said.

Aldermen to hear more about city housekeeping

The Eunice Board of Aldermen are to hear of more community housekeeping measures as four properties are its agenda for cleanup action.
Alderman Jack Burson, Dale Soileau and Jason Bertrand, along with Mayor Scott Fontenot, met Thursday to set the agenda for the city meeting on Tuesday.
The meeting, which starts at 6:15 p.m. with a public hearing on a contract with LAWCO, includes a condemnation hearing for a property at 1050 Faris Street.
