Bobcats’ Youngblood, Brasseaux earn Class 3A All-State first team honors

One player who delivered strikes and another whose specialty was catching them lead the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A All-State baseball and softball teams.
Iota High junior pitcher Hunter Wriborg is the 3A Most Valuable Player for baseball, while North Vermilion High senior catcher Kaylee Lopez is the 3A MVP for softball.
Wriborg led Iota to the Class 3A runner-up title after going 10-1 with 75 strikeouts and a 0.86 ERA. Lopez, a McNeese State signee, hit .645 with a 1.514 slugging percentage, 18 doubles, three triples, 23 homers and 74 RBIs and helped North Vermilion to the second round of the playoffs.
Berwick High baseball coach Brandon Bravata and Crowley High softball coach Josh Schrader won the Coach of the Year honors for the LSWA squads selected by a panel of sportswriters.
Bravata, in his first season as head coach of the Panthers, took fourth-seeded Berwick (29-8) to the program’s first state title since 1978 a despite graduating six starters from a 2017 team that reached the 3A semifinals.
Schrader, who just completed his fourth season at Crowley, led the ninth-seeded Ladies to a 25-9 overall record, an upset of No. 1 Brusly in the quarterfinals and the program’s first ever semifinal appearance.
Joining Wriborg as first-team pitchers on the baseball team are junior Cody Cook (8-2) of De La Salle, junior Trey Rugg (12-1) of Sterlington and junior Mitchell Sanford (7-1) of Berwick.
The catcher is senior Josh Youngblood (.421) of Eunice. The infield consists of junior Robby Gilbert (.404) of St. Charles, senior Jarrett McDonald (.480) of Sterlington, senior Will Doughty (.403) of Iota and senior Cameron Daigle (.482) of Brusly.
In the outfield, selections include senior Brooks Rushworth (.386) of Sterlington, sophomore Andrew Ashby (.444) of Iota and senior Jaden Brasseaux (.459) of Eunice.
Senior Kyle Pitre (9-3) of Berwick, junior Chase Fisher (.377) of South Beauregard, junior Jacob Burke (.351) of University, senior Tyler Theriot (10-3) of Brusly and senior Grant Upton (9-1) of University were picked as utility players.
The four softball pitchers are junior Victoria Abrams (11-0) of Caldwell, sophomore Brittney Turner (19-7) of Albany, junior Nella LaGrange (22-8) of Crowley and junior Myka Lester (18-8) of Westlake.
Junior Phoebe Spell (.505) of Crowley, junior Whitney Tate (.661) of Caldwell, senior Kayelea Dearmon (.464) of Jena and senior Kylie Naomi (.471) of North Vermilion are the infielders.
In the outfield consists of sophomore KB Briley (.485) of Sterlington, senior Teri Johnson (.505) of Iota and junior Jaclyn Deason of South Beauregard (.450).
The five utility players chosen are junior Mary-Cathryn Comeaux (18-5) of Brusly, senior Jade Brady (15-2) of St. Charles, senior Allie Hutton (18-6) of Hannan, senior Caroline Julian (.520) of St. Charles and freshman Makenzie Droddy (.465) of Iota.
