AgCenter research station breaks milk production

The dairy herd at the LSU AgCenter Southeast Research Station in Franklinton has broken a record for milk production, reaching the highest rolling herd average ever documented in Louisiana.
The station’s rolling herd average, which indicates the average amount of milk a cow produced in the previous 12 months, hit 25,097 pounds at the December 2016 measurement, said AgCenter dairy specialist Charlie Hutchison. A gallon of milk equals 8.6 pounds.

Strike early on weed-infested winter lawns

BATON ROUGE – Recent cold weather in Louisiana has caused lawns to go mostly dormant.
If you see green plants in the lawn right now, it’s probably the first flush of winter weeds such as annual bluegrass, chickweed and lawn burweed, said LSU AgCenter turf specialist Ron Strahan.
“Now is a good time to apply selective herbicides like atrazine and Trimec to the lawn to kill these young actively growing weeds,” Strahan said.
