Nearly 5,000 votes cast in Tuesday’s election

Nearly 5,000 votes had been cast in St. Landry Parish in Tuesday’s election as of Wednesday, according to the secretary of state’s website.
Cheryl Milburn, St. Landry Parish registrar of voters, said 4,076 voters were cast in person in early voting that ended Tuesday. Of those early votes, 563 were cast at an early voting poll at the Eunice Municipal Complex.
Milburn had projected a turnout of up to 60 percent for Tuesday’s election, but throttled that number back to 40 percent after early voting.
The heaviest vote came in Opelousas, but the Eunice vote was strong too, she said.
It was the first municipal vote in Eunice in which an early voting poll was open at City Hall.
“So many, especially older people, thanked them for having that office in Eunice,” Milburn said.
There 4,732 votes cast in St. Landry Parish at the end of early voting Tuesday, according to the secretary of state’s website.
In Acadia Parish, there were 4,325 votes cast as of Tuesday. In Evangeline Parish, the total was 2,215 votes.
There were 307,237 votes cast in the state at the end of early voting.
Some of the votes were absentee.
On Tuesday, polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
According to the secretary of state’s website, there are 6,215 people registered to vote in the Eunice municipal election.
The deadline to request an absentee by mail ballot is Nov. Friday by 4:30 p.m. Voters can request an absentee by mail ballot online through the Voter Portal or in writing through a Registrar of Voters Office (other than military and overseas voters).
The deadline for a registrar of voters to receive a voted mail ballot is Monday by 4:30 p.m. (other than military and overseas voters).
The runoff election is scheduled Dec. 8.
The deadline to register to vote in person or by mail is Nov. 7.
The deadline to register to vote through the GeauxVote Online Registration System is Nov. 17.
Early voting is from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 24 through Dec. 1 (except Sunday, Nov. 25).
