Shirley Ray Higginbotham passed away on Monday September 25, 2017, at the age of 74. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at 10:00 AM. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with burial to follow at St. Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Fr. Clinton Sensat will officiate.

Tourism Commission meets to discuss upcoming fall events

There are a lot of activities coming up in Acadia Parish, not the least of which are the 23rd annual Germanfest and the 81st International Rice Festival. Those events and others were noted during the September meeting of the Acadia Parish Convention and Visitors Commission Thursday, Sept. 21.

Early Voting in Eunice set Sept. 30 St. Landry Parish Registrar of Voters office will hold early voting in Eunice for all registered voters from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Sept. 30 and Oct. 5 to 7 at Eunice City Hall, second floor, Clerk of Courts office.

Pearl Mae Young

Pearl Mae Prather Young passed away on Friday, September 2, 2017, at the age of 87. No services have been scheduled at this time. Pearl is survived by one son; James M. Young, Jr. and wife Debbie of Eunice, one daughter; Peggy Y.

Corn maze set at Botanic Gardens at Burden

The LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden will welcome the fall season with a Corn Maze Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 7. The day will feature a farm animal petting zoo, pumpkin decorating, hay mountain climb, corn maze, children’s zipline, hayride and a giant slingshot.

LSU biologist works to solve future food shortage crisis

Food production must increase by 50 percent to support the world’s population by 2050, which is estimated to increase to about 10 billion, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization.
