According to police reports, a shooting was reported just minutes after the football game between Rayne High and Eunice High ended on Oct. 11. The incident occurred off the school campus near the intersection of Stadium Drive and North Polk Street.
As the shots rang out, fans and members of the schools’ bands and football teams sought shelter under the stadium bleachers. Several bullets reportedly struck cars in the parking area. No injuries were reported.
According to a statement released by Police Chief Carroll J. Stelly the next day, while they were investigating the incident near Rayne High, officers were notified of a gunshot victim being treated at Acadia General Hospital in Crowley.
Detectives responding to the hospital learned that the victim had been shot on the corner of Lyman Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive, about a half mile from the football stadium and near Armstrong Middle School.
