St. Ed’s, Warriors grab split

The Lady Jays earned a key District 4-1A win Tuesday as St. Edmund rolled to a 64-25 victory over Hamilton Christian.
With the win, No. 15 Lady Jays improve to 10-15 overall and 7-6 in district.
St. Edmund closes the regular season Friday night at home against No. 3 Merryville (20-6, 12-0).
The Lady Jays jumped out to a 23-3 first quarter lead, sparked by eight points from Gabby Fontenot and seven points by Abby Miller.
After a 6-0 run by the Lady Jays, the Lady Warriors (1-23, 0-13) scored their only points in the period with a free throw by Denea Carter and a drive in the lane by Tai Coleman.
Fontenot nailed a trey, followed by a jumper by Kinsley Marcantel and a four points from Miller.
Fontenot closed the period with five points and Marcantel added a bucket as the Lady Jays held a comfortable lead they would never relinquish.
St. Edmund opened the second period with a 5-2 run before Gabby Perridon hit a trey for the Lady Warriors.
Camille Leger scored in the lane, Rebecca Benoit scored off a rebound and Miller added two layups as the Lady Jays led 37-9 at the break.
St. Edmund exploded with a 20-3 surge in the third quarter, sparked by seven points from Fontenot.
Maggie Larriviere scored twice in the lane in the run, while Fontenot drilled a trey and Miller added two more layups as the Lady Jays led, 48-10.
Two buckets by Fontenot were followed by a jumper from Jill Simpson and a trey by Marcantel increased the Lady Jays’ lead to 57-12 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
Hamilton Christian outscored St. Edmund 12-7 in the final period, aided by 11 points from Coleman.
Simpson scored five points in the period including a trey, while Tanzy Miller added the other Lady Jay bucket as St. Edmund sealed the 64-25 win.
Fontenot led the Lady Jays with 17 points, while Miller added 16 points.
Larriviere and Simpson both contributed eight points, while Marcantel contributed seven points in the Lady Jay win.
Coleman led Hamilton Christian with 14 points.

Hamilton Christian remained atop the District 4-1A standings with a 84-27 win over St. Edmund.
The No. 3 Warriors (18-10, 10-1) are tied with No. 6 Grand Lake (20-6, 10-1) for the district title with three games left in the regular season.
The Blue Jays (0-19, 0-11) will take on Merrville, Basile and South Cameron to close out the season.
St. Edmund’s last regular season win was Dec. 3, 2017 against Gueydan, while the Blue Jays’ last disrict win was a 67-54 victory over False River Academy on Jan. 26, 2016.
Hamilton Christian exploded for a 28-6 run to begin the game.
Trailing 7-0, the Blue Jays’ first points came on a bucket by Carter Andrus with 5;12 left in the period.
The Warriors answered with an 18-0 surge before Luke Trahan scored off a steal and Christian Fontenot added a bucket for the Jays.
Trahan scored the first five points of the second period to help the Jays close the gap to 28-11.
Atfter a free thrown by Gus Brown, the Warriors responded with an 18-0 run to move ahead, 50-12.
A free throw by Tyler Fonville and a putback byAndrus closed the gap to 54-15 at the break.
Hamilton Christian went on a 19-6 third quarter run as the Warriors continued its dominance.
Andrus, Alex Dupre and Christian Fontenot scored six points in the period.
Hamilton Christian used a balanced offense in the period as seven players scored, including six points from Zion Stewart and a trey by Corbin McEntire.
Holding a 73-21 advantage heading into the final period, the Warriors outscored St. Edmund 11-6 in the quarter.
Esston Coleman hit two free throws and Dupre drilled a trey early in the period for the Jays.
An 8-0 run by the Warriors, sparked by four points from Kendrick Fontenot, increased Hamilton Christian’s advantage to 58 points.
Henry Brown hit a free throw in the final seconds to close the gap to 84-27.
Trahan led the Jays with seven points, while Andrus added six, Dupre chipped in five points and Fontenot contributed four points.
Adrian Brown led the Warriors with 14 points, while Reggie Jackson added 11 points.
McEntire and Michael Thomas both pushed in 10 points for Hamilton Christian.
