The LSUE baseball and softball teams were recognized for their successful seasons at Tuesday’s Eunice Board of Aldermen’s meeting.
Jeff Willis, athletic director and head baseball coach, said he appreciated the city’s support that included escorts in and out of Eunice by police, marshals and firefighters.
The baseball team won its sixth NJCAA Division II national title. The softball team finished fourth in Division II and has won five national titles.
“It is very exciting to see young people that have a goal at hand then reach that goal,” Willis said.
“It is amazing what can be accomplished in any type of group, any type of business, any type team that’s out there with people who understand that their identities are not tied to a specific job, is not tied to how much money is in their pocket. Their identity is not tied to how much power they possibly have. Their identity is tied what type of person they are and what type of person they strive to be each and every day and how many people they can help that are around them,” Willis said at the Board meeting.
“I’ve been able to witness five other teams do that and five other teams dog pile at the end, but we’ve always been on defense,” he said.
Previous teams have scored and there a “just kind of waiting for that last out,” he said.
“This one was an experience that you dont’ expect it. You don’t expect it to happen and then when it does occur it is the emotion that flows,” he said.
The 2018 team set a record of the most wins (59-6) passing the 2012 championship team’s 57-5 record.
The sophomore group finished with a 105-17 record and the team GPA was 3.14.
