Even with the social distancing restrictions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, LSU Eunice baseball and softball coaches will hold summer camps.
LSUE head baseball coach Jeff Willis and his staff will conduct two camps: July 13-17 and July 27-31.
“We can’t wait to see the kids,” Willis said of his 18th year of the camps.
“Our camp season has always been one of the most enjoyable times of our year,” he said. “To see the kids running around, learning the game that we love so much can’t really be put into words.”
Early registration fees are $195 with the late registration fee set at $220.
The camp is for ages 5 to 14 and each session is limited to 50 participants.
The camp time is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day with Friday’s camp will be from 9 a.m. to noon.
Campers should bring a glove, bat and water jug and/or any type of sports drink.
The camp will be held at Bengal Field but in case of rain it will be moved to the gym with all CDC guidelines followed.
The camp is designed to teach all necessary skills of baseball in a kinetically proven system that will bring each player to a higher level of play.
Campers will improve their skills in the three main aspects of baseball: hitting, pitching and defense.
Campers will also learn additional skills of base running, pitching strategies and the mental aspects of baseball.
“Our players benefit as much as the kids do, as they have to teach what they know, which only makes them grow in the game,” Willis said of the Bengal players who help in the camps. “It’s a win win for all involved.”
LSUE head softball coach Meghan Collins will hold camps on July 21-22 at Lady Bengal Field.
The first camp is for ages 12-18 with sessions to begin at 4 p.m. for individual training with the LSUE staff.
The cost is $45 per session.
“We like to keep a lower number at camps as it allows us to work more closely with them and help improve their skills,” Collins said. “It is a great opportunity for them to learn in the mini sessions.”
The sessions are divided into pitching and hitting with a maximum of three pitchers and 10 hitters per session.
All pitchers must bring their own catchers.
All hitters will be taught techniques to advance their game to the next level.
Pitchers will showcase their abilities as well as learn new drills and knowledge to become a better pitcher.
“The individual instruction is good for the players as we can help them improve their game,” she said.
The Lady Bengals Elite Skills Camp will be held July 22 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for ages 12-18.
The cost is $115 and is limited to 50 participants.
Campers will learn all aspects of the game from LSUE coaches and players to increase their overall knowledge of the sport.
“This is an all day event where the kids go through every aspect of the game,” Collins said. “We will work on offense, defense, base running as well as the mental aspect of the game.
“It is a condensed version of what we would do at a team practice,” the coach said.
“We are trying to teach fundamentals, team work and communication,” Collins said. “We want the kids go back to their teams as better players.”
