Don’t forget Lincoln’s executive order

Letter to the editor

Your article in today’s paper (Feb. 16) on executive orders failed to mention what is probably the most important one, Lincoln’s order to free the slaves, commonly known as the Emancipation Proclamation. His authority to do so was questionable, so he based it on his war powers and limited it to the states that were in rebellion against the Union. Subsequent Constitutional amendments completed the work of freeing slaves elsewhere and granting them citizenship.
