LAKE CHARLES – St. Edmund opened District 4-1A play with a 7-1 win over Grand Lake.
The Hornets (5-8, 1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Jaren Sonnier singled and scored when Kris Reina reached on a fielder’s choice.
St. Edmund (11-6, 1-0) tied the game in the top of the second when Bryce Vidrine singled and scored on a hit by Will Turk.
The Blue Jays grabbed the lead with three runs in the top of the third, begun when Carter Lejeune singled, Brock Bieber reached on an error and Brad Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Dawson Ardoin singled in Lejeune and Vidrine followed with a double to plate Bieber and Miller.
Grand Lake threatened in the bottom of the inning when Sonnier walked and Kade Massey singled but both were left stranded.
St. Edmund added three more runs in the top of the fourth as the Blue Jays moved ahead, 7-1.
Jack Miller singled and scored on a sacrifice by Lejeune.
Brad Miller walked and scored on a hit by Vidrine, while Ardoin walked and courtesy runner Henry Brown scored on an error for a 7-1 Blue Jay lead.
The Hornets threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning when Sonnier and Massey both singled but failed to score.
Kylin Broussard singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for the Hornets but could not advance.
Ardoin earned the complete game win as he allowed one earned run on six hits with five straight outs and one walk.
Vidrine went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored to lead the Jays.
Brad Miller finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored, while Lejeune and Ardoin both went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
The Blue Jays will entertain Sacred Heart of Ville Platte at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
