Blue Jays soar past WCA

BELLEVUE – St. Edmund kept its grip on second place in District 5-1A as the Blue Jays rolled to a 9-3 win over Westminster Christian Academy Wednesday at the Crusader Field.
The Jays (11-12, 6-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as St. Edmund took advantage of six walks.
Brad Miller, Jack Miller and Brock Bieber walked to load the bases.
After a strikeout, Luke Doucet walked to plate Brad Miller, while Dawson Ardoin walked to push in Jack Miller for a 2-0 lead.
Lance Miller also walked to score Bieber before the WCA defense stiffened to stop the inning.
The Jays added two more runs in the top of the third, begun when Doucet reached on an error and scored when Lance Miller advanced on another WCA miscue.
Miller scored on a Crusader balk to push the Jays ahead, 5-0.
St. Edmund added two more runs in the top of the fourth, begun when Jack Miller singled and scored on a triple by Bieber.
Bieber scored on a balk before a double play ended the rally.
WCA closed the gap to 7-1 in the bottom of the inning when Braxton Roy was hit by a pitch and scored on an error.
The Crusaders pulled closer with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to close the gap to 7-3.
Conner Lyons reached on a fieler’s choice and scored on an error, while Holden Broussard singled and crossed home plate on a hit by Shelby Myers.
The Jays added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
Austin Gradney and Brad Miller both singled and scored on a WCA error.
Bieber earned the win for the Jays as he struck out five, walked two and allowed two earned runs on five hits over five innings.
Phil Fontenot pitched two innings for SEH as he struck out three, walked one and scattered two hits,
WCA pitchers combined for 11 walks and five strikeouts, allowing five earned runs and four hits.
The Blue Jays will hold Senior Day Monday against Catholic High of Pointe Coupee before closing the regular season Thursday at Eunice High.
