Hornets sting Jays, 30-6

NEW ROADS – Catholic High of Pointe Coupee rolled to a 30-6 win over St. Edmund as the Hornets sealed the District 5-1A championship.
St. Edmund (6-4, 3-2) entered the district finale as the No. 10 in the LHSAA Division IV power rankings, while CHPC (8-2, 5-0) was No. 8.
The LHSAA playoff brackets will be released today.
St. Edmund was forced to punt on its first possession and the Hornets then went 43 yards on seven plays for the game’s first points.
Collin Grezaffi scored on a 16-yard run and Aiden Vosburg ran in the two point conversion as the Hornets jumped out to an 8-0 lead with 4:03 left in the period.
The Blue Jays responded with a nine-play, 63-yard drive sparked by a 31-yard pass from Henry Brown to Kieran Davis.
But St. Edmund was stopped on fourth-and-goal at the Hornet 5.
Catholic High-PC then mounted the drive of the game as the Hornets went 95 yards on seven plays, capped off with a 41-yard scoring run by Matthew Langlois.
Cameron Decoteau’s PAT pushed the Hornets up 15-0 with 7:17 left in the second period.
The Blue Jays answereed with five play, 60-yard drive late in the second quarter.
Peyton Marcantel found Will Turk open for a 34-yard touchdown pass as the Jays pushed across their only points of the night.
A penalty erased a two-point conversion run by Davis and then the PAT was blocked as St. Ed’s trailed 15-6 with 5:13 left before intermisson.
The Hornets recovered the onside kick and CHPC kept the drive alive with a fourth down conversion near midfield.
On their second fourth down, Langlois was stopped inches short at the Blue Jay 29.
St. Edmund fumbled the ball right back to the Hornets and after a quarterback sack, Langlois broke loose for a 20-yard run.
But the Blue Jay defense then stiffened and stopped Langlois short of the goal line on the final play of the first half.
After a personal foul against the Jays on the last play of the first half, SEH was forced to kickoff deep in their own territory to begin the third quarter.
The Hornets began their drive at the CHPC 45 and then ran the ball nine straight times through the middle of the Blue Jay defense.
Langlois capped the drive with a 22-yard touchdown run.
Grezaffi scored on the two-point conversion run to extend CHPC’s lead to 23-6 with 7:08 left in the third frame.
St. Edmund’s Marcantel boke loose for a 19-yard run to open the next Jay possesssion, but the drive stalled near midfield.
Marcantel’s punt stopped at the Hornet 7 with 4:40 left in the period.
Catholic mounted another time consuming drive that took 6:31 off the clock.
Midway through the 13-play drive – and after a holding penalty – Aiden Vosburg completed his only pass of the game when he connected with Nick Carriere for a key 18-yard catch.
Later, the Jays jumped offside on a fourth down play and Langlois then scored on a 12-yard run.
Decoteau kicked the PAT as the Hornets moved ahead 30-6 with 10:09 left in the fourth quarter.
St. Ed’s ran the ball nine times on its next possession but the Jays were stopped on fourth down with 3:37 left.
Catholic fumbled the ball back three plays later at their own 32, but the Jays could not push the ball into the end zone in the final two minutes of the game.
The Hornets finished with 314 yards rushing, led by Langlois (13-44) and Grezaffi (18-107).
The Blue Jays were limited to 163 yards of total offense but Henry Brown (1-of-2, 31 yards) and Marcantel (1-for-1, 34 yards) combined for 65 yards passing.
