The Iota Lady Bulldogs scored runs in six of seven innings Monday, including a 10-run outburst in the final frame, in cruising to their 17th victory of the season, a 19-3 thumping of Rayne in a non-district contest at the Lady Wolves’ home park.
In all, the Lady Dogs (17-7) cranked out 18 hits off Rayne hurler Karlie Weber, who also walked nine.
Iota banged out eight of those hits in the top of the seventh inning.
Ryley Crochet logged two of her three hits in the frame, both RBI singles.
Also plating runs with singles in the seventh were Dixie Guidry, McKenzy LeJeune, Peyton Dubose and Greta Fontenot. Makenzie Droddy and Taylor Dupre also pushed across runs on a pair of bases-loaded walks.
Things started out shaky for Weber in the second inning when she allowed two runs on an RBI single by Guidry and a sacrifice fly by Droddy.
The Lady Dogs pushed the lead to 3-0 one inning later when Dubose singled and scored on a double by Crochet.
Droddy notched her only hit of the game in the third inning and it was a big one. The freshman catcher unloaded on an 0-2 pitch and drove it over the center field wall for a two-run blast.
Rayne finally got on the board in the bottom of the frame when Kassidie Bourgeois singled and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jessi Cary to trim the deficit to 5-1.
The Lady Dogs had an answer, however.
Iota pushed across three more runs in the top of the fifth on a run-scoring triple by Amelie Armand and an RBI single by Dupre. The final run crossed the plate courtesy of one of Rayne’s four errors.
Armand added an RBI single in the top of the sixth before Rayne plated two runs in the bottom of the frame on two hits, including an RBI double, and an error.
Fontenot picked up the victory in the circle for the Lady Dogs after surrendering three runs, two earned, on eight hits. She struck out three.
Crochet, Armand and Dubose each tallied three hits for the Lady Dogs.
LeJeune, Fontenot and Guidry each had two hits and Droddy, Dupre and Teri Johnson each finished with one.
Bourgeois and Trinity Axtell paced Rayne’s eight-hit attack with two hits each. Savanna LaCombe, Madalyn Dupont,Tori Arceneaux and Payton Richard each had one.
Iota returned to district action yesterday with a road trip to Port Barre but results of that contest were not available as of press time.
The Lady Dogs also are in action Thursday when they entertain Pine Prairie in a District 5-3A showdown.
Pine Prairie and Crowley are currently tied for the league lead with one loss each. Iota follows with two district losses.
