NEW ROADS – The trek for the the District 5-1A championship has begun.
The St. Edmund Lady Jays held off a late rally to earn a 53-50 win over False River Academy.
The Lady Gators opened with a 14-13 first quarter advantage, led by Kate Brooks’ five points.
St. Edmund’s Gabby Fontenot led the Lady Jays with five points.
The Lady Jays exploded for a 15-9 run in the second quarter to push ahead, 28-23 at the break.
Abby Miller scored six points in the period for the Lady Jays.
Sarah Allen pushed on four points and Brooks hit a trey for FRA.
St. Edmund outscored the Lady Gators 12-10 in the third period to keep control of the lead.
Fontenot scored eight points for St. Edmund as the Lady Jays took a 40-33 lead into the fourth quarter.
False River rallied for an 18-13 run the final period, but the Lady Jays held on to the three-point win.
Camille Leger psuhed in six points for the Lady Jays, while Allen added six points for FRA in the quarter.
Fontenot finished with 17 points to lead St. Edmund, while Miller chipped in 10 points.
Leget and Allison Lafleur each added six points.
Brooks led FRA with 18 points, while Allen contributed 12 points.

FRA 55, St. Ed’s 24
False River Academy exploded for a 20-0 first quarter run as the Gators rolled to a 55-24 win over St. Edmund Monday in New Roads.
Damian Johnson scored 12 points in the period for False River (5-8, 1-0).
The Gators outscored St. Edmund (2-15, 0-1) 13-8 in the second quarter to take a 33-8 advantage into the locker room.
Carter Andrus hit a trey for the Jays, while William Manuel added three points in the quarter.
Grayson Burns led FRA with six points in the period, while Johnson chipped in five points.
The Gators put the game out of reach with a 20-4 third quarter surge, sparked by 12 points from Johnson.
Christian Fontenot hit a bucket as Alex Dupre and Austin Gradney added a free throw for the Jays in the period.
St. Edmund outscored the Gators 12-2 in the fourth quarter, aided by two trey from Gradney and four points from Manuel.
Johnson finished with 29 points for False River, while Burns chipped in eight points.
Gradney led St. Edmund with eight points as team mate Manuel added second points.
St. Edmund entertains Catholic High of Pointe Coupee Friday as district action continues.
