Kneeland, Smith shine in Bear Paw Relays

A’jah Kneeland dominated the field once again, tallying 38 points during the week to help lead the Crowley Ladies to the team title at the Bear Paw Relays host by Church Point High School.
Kneeland dominated in the pits, claiming top honors in the long jump (16-9) and the triple jump (34-1) before hitting the track for a win in the 100-meter hurdles (15.68). She also just missed out on another title in the 300 hurdles where she came in just behind champion Olivia Bundy of Church Point in a time of 50.38.
Kneeland’s performance helped keep the Ladies in the race for the team title, but it was their 4x400-meter relay team of Jaelyn Johnson, Anijah Wiliams, Karlnasha Johnson and Kaitlyn George that pushed them over the top for the second time this season.
The Ladies, which trailed Eunice by a point (95-94) heading into the final event,posted a winning time of 4:27.00, two seconds faster than the Lady Bobcats, to win the relay and the title.
Crowley finished with 104 points and Eunice had 103.
Iota placed fourth in the team standings with 62 points and host Church Point was seventh in the field of 14 teams with 40 points.
Anijah Williams claimed the Ladies only other victory on the day with a winning time of 26.45 inthe 200-meter dash.
Williams also ran a leg on the Ladies’ runnerup 4x100 and 4x200 relay squads.
She teamed with George, Johnson and Jayliah Vallian for a time of 1:48.21 in the 4x200 and then joined Terri Broussard, Kamry Franklin and Johnson to clock a time of 52.39 in the 4x100.
Also adding a second-place finish was Sophie Fontenot in the high jump with a leap of 4-10. Alaysia Senegal was fifth in the event (4-8) and she also placed sixth in the triple jump (29-1 ½).
Jaelyn Johnson added a third-place finish in the 400 (1:03.95) and George was third in the 800 (2:45.33).
Also scoring for the Ladies were Franklin with a fourth-place time of .13.33 in the 100 and Vallian was fifth (13.60). Tamyeia Guillory was sixth in the 800 (3:01.08).
Smith triples up
Chloe Smith didn’t run her best times of the season on Wednesday, but the times she turned in were good enough.
The sophomore tallied 30.5 points by sweeping the distance events to lead the Lady Dogs to a fourth-place showing in the Bear Paw Relays hosted by Church Point High School.
Smith began her impressive afternoon by winning the 3200-meter run, which was run while the field events were taking place, in a time of 2:41.64. The time was nearly a minute ahead of teammate and runnerup Ellen McDaniel (15:22.76).
The distance specialist returned to the track later in the evening and clocked a 6:01.54 to win the 1600 just ahead of Beau Chene’s Allison Deviller (6:10.40).
Smith also edged out Deviller in the 800-meter run with a winning time of 2:41.64 and she closed out the day by running a leg on Iota’s fifth-place 4x400-meter relay team (4:39.81) along with Hallie Stoma, Andriana Curtis and Abigail Fontenot.
Fontenot added to the Lady Dogs’ point total by finishing second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.38) and third in the long jump (15-6 1/2).
Bethani Chesterman tallied four points with a fourth-place showing in the discus (84-11).
Rounding out Iota’s scoring with sixth-place finishes were Boone in the 100 hurdles (19.10) and the 300 hurdles (57.09), Lisa Fontenot in the shot put (26-6) and Curtis in the 400-meter dash (1:07.71).
Gents finish fifth
The Crowley Gents battled through a tough field of 14 teams to place fifth in last weeks’ Bear Paw Relays with 48 points.
Cecilia scored 175 points to claim the team title and Breaux Bridge was second with 110. Cecilia and Church Point followed with 59 and 49 points, respectively.
Obadiah Butler paced the Gents by placing second in the 200-meter dash (22.88) and third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.49). He also joined Keenan Charles Moore, Paul Dugar and Perry Myles to place fourth in both the 4x100 (44.54) and the 4x200 (1:34.25).
The Gents’ 4x400 relay team of Dylan Brooks, Tyler Carrier, Demarcus Doiron and Tyron Goodley placed third in a time of 3:56.41.
Also scoring on the track was Perry Myles with a fourth-place finish in the 110 hurdles (16.21) and a fifth-place showing in the 300 hurdles (43.94).
The Gents got a pair of third-place finishes in the field from Chris Lewis in the long jump (21-7 ¼) and Ernesto Vasquez in the shot put (42-0 ½).
In addition, Joshua Richard was sixth in the discus (112-10) and Markel Domino was sixth in the javelin (138-8).
Church Point scored the bulk of its points in the dashes.
Breelyn Jones won the 100 (10.94) and the 200 (22.56) and then teamed with Chad Hornsby, Gavin Richard and Travon Wheeler to place second in the 4x100 relay in a time of 43.76.
Wheeler also scored in the dashes with a runnerup time of 11.19 in the 100 and he placed third in the 200 (23.15).
Dylan Nelson was Iota’s top point earner with a runnerup showing in the 400 (52.42) and a fourth-place mark of 19-11 in the long jump.
Brett Fontenot added a third-place finish in the high jump (5-8) and Juan Rosales was fifth in the 1600 (5:16.64).
