Lady Jays fall in tourney

ELTON – The Lady Jays faced a familar foe in the Elton tournament as Gueydan handed St. Edmund a 51-32 loss Wednesday night.
The two teams faced each other at St. Edmund the night before as the Honey Bears earned a 56-36 win.
Gueydan jumped out to a 19-7 first quarter lead, sparked by 13 points from Ashari Terry.
St. Edmund’s Gabby Fontenot had a three-pointer and Maggie Larriviere added a pair of buckets for the Lady Jays.
St. Edmund regrouped for a 10-4 second quarter run to close the gap to 23-17 at the break.
Fontenot drilled two more treys and Mary Beth Lafleur and Savannah DeVillier added a free throw in the period.
The Honey Bears exploded for a 11-2 third quarter surge to put the game out of reach, 34-19.
Camille Leger scored the only points in the period for the Lady Jays.
St. Edmund responded with 13 fourth quarter points, while Gueydan’s 17-point performance made the final, 51-32.
Terry pushed in 12 points in the period for the Honey Bears.
Rebecca Benoit pushed in six points in the period for the Lady Jays, while Fontenot added another trey to finish with 14 points.
Lafleur and DeVillier also scored in the quarter to finish with three points each.
Terry led Gueydan with 28 points, while Kendra Petry chipped in eight points.
After finishing the Elton tournament this weekend, the Lady Jays return home 6 p.m. Thursday to take on Pine Prairie.
