Lady Jays, Iota fall in softball playoffs

RUSTON – The No. 16 St. Edmund Lady Jays had its season end in the LHSAA Division IV regionals with a 14-0 loss to No. 1 Cedar Creek.
Lady Cougar pitcher Lauren Menzina struck out 11 and limited the Lady Jays to two hits in the five-inning mercy-rule contest.
Lady Jay Karleigh Solieau took the loss as surrendered 14 runs on 14 hits over four innings, striking out one.
Gabby Fontenot and Kinsley Marcantel each collected one hit to lead the Lady Jays (13-15).
Fontenot singled in the first inning, while Marcantel singled in the third inning.
Cedar Creek racked up 14 hits in the game and scored runs in all four innings.
The Lady Cougars opened with four runs in the bottom of the first, begun when Katelin Cooper singled, Anna Roberson walked and both scored on a double by Lauren Menzina.
Alli Freeman and Savannah Rojas also scored in the inning.
Cedar Creek added three runs in the second frame, begun when Hallie Rambin singled, Roberson walked and both scored on a hit by Freeman.
Freeman scored on a double by Lillian Soto.
The Lady Cougars psuhed ahead 9-0 with two more runs in the third inning as Rambin singled, Roberson walked and both scored on a triple by Menzina.
Cedar Creek sealed the win with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, sparked when Soto and Riley Spradlin singled and both scored on a hit by Rambin.
Defending state champion Cedar Creek (23-8) will take on No. 8 Sacred Heart of Ville Platte (13-12) at noon Thursday in the state tournament at Frasch Park in Sulphur.
Sacred Heart earned an 8-2 win over No. 9 St. Frederick.

Kaplan 2, Iota 0
KAPLAN – No. 7 Kaplan Lady Pirate senior Dawn Bruton hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie against No. 10 Iota (23-10) in the Class 3-A softball regionals.
Jayden Baudoin then singled and pinch runner Alyia Brossard later scored when pitcher Carina Chargois doubled to put Kaplan up, 2-0.
The Lady Pirates (22-17) will face No. 2 Pine Prairie (31-4) at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the state quarterfinals at Frasch Park in Sulphur.
Kaplan’s freshman pitcher Carina Chargois threw a complete game shutout with eight strike outs and four hits.
Chargois helped her cause at the plate as she finished 3-for-3.
Iota’s hits were by Makenzie Droddy (1-for-1, 3 BB), Teri Johnson (1-for-4), Greta Fontenot (1-for-3) and Amelie Armand (1-for-3).
The Lady Pirates had 10 hits and left the bases loaded twice.
