The spring sports seasons were halted because of COVID-19, but the student-athletes’ accomplishments were recognized by the LHSAA as part of the Academic All-State honors.
The LHSAA All-Academic award program recognizes the academic excellence of senior student-athletes who have attained a 3.5 grade point average or higher by placing them on the Composite All-Academic Team or Class All-Academic Team.
To earn composite team honors, a student-athlete’s six-semester GPA must have an un-weighted 4.00.
In order to be selected to the All-Academic Team, the student-athlete must be a senior, have participated in the sport for at least two years, and achieved a six-semester cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 or better based on a 4.0 scale.
Four local softball players earned academic all-state honors.
In Class 4-A, Eunice High’s Alina Darbonne had a 3.90 GPA and Lady Bobcat teammate Jesslyn Reed had a 3.80 GPA as both were members of the Lady Cats’ basketball team.
Both EHS seniors were injured this softball season and could not participate on the field.
In Class 1-A, St. Edmund catcher Kinsley Marcantel was recognized with a 3.57 GPA along with short stop Jaeydn Soileau (3.57).
Marcantel also played basketball for the Lady Jays.
Other area athletes that earned Academic All-State softball honors included Church Point’s Olivia Benoit (4.0), Lindsey Lyons (3.76) and Aline Savoie (3.52).
Iota’s Ryley Crochet (3.95) and Madelyn Link (3.86) were also honored, along with Mamou’s Dacia Richard (3.57) and Madison Fontenot (3.52).
The LHSAA Non-Select and Select softball tournament championships were scheduled to be played this weekend but the virus erased all hopes for the tournament.
