Gabrielle "Gabby" Marvin, 17 year old of Mermentau, has had a breakout year.
In her first year of boxing, Gabby had proven to be a true competitor, who gives her all in every match-up.
Gabby's first few matches showed her determination to succeed in boxing. She gave up weight and age to get matches, stopping two opponents in the second round and winning her first belt in her third fight. At this point Gabby decided to move to the national level, traveling to Fort Lauderdale, Fl. for the Women's National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions and then to Chattanooga, Tn. for the USA Eastern Elite National Qualifying Tournament.
Nicole Ocasia, ranked No. l in the USA, was her opponent in the finals of both tournaments and both bouts went to Ocasia by a 3-2 split decision.
Gabby then traveled to the Ringside World Championship Tournament, and the Title National Tournament of Champions, were she was unopposed at both.
Gabby then traveled to the Westem Elite National Qualifying Tournament in Albuquerque,NM where she qualified to compete for a spot on team USA in Salt Lake City Utah in October.
Gabby's most recent match was Thursday, June 28 in Charleston, West Virginia at the National Junior Olympics and Youth Open Championships where she faced Trinity Muray. Murray put up a good fight but she was no match for Gabby's quick jab and devastating body shots and at the end of the match, Gabby’s hand was raised to name her the 2018 National Youth Open Female 132-pound champion.
From the beginning it was obvious that Gabby had a special talent and outstanding drive for boxing. Gabby is a 2018 Midland High Honor Graduate and is attending University of Louisiana at Monroe in the fall.
Gabby has been around boxing her entire life. She followed her brother to the gym and was always at his matches were she developed a love for the sport herself.
Gabby trains at Rajun Cajun Amateur Boxing Club gym where Head Coach Beau Williford and Assistant Head Coach Deirdre Gogarty-Morrison, the former Women's Featherweight World Champion, are moulding Gabby into a world class boxer.
Working with Gogarty and Williford, Gabby has improved on a daily basis. Her jab is incredibly fast and hard, her right hand and left hook are very accurate, with real power and they have been compared to the moves of world class boxers.
After only one year of boxing Gabby has moved up in the USA boxing National ranking to the No.5 ranked 132 pound youth female in the nation. After her recent win in West Mrginia
Gabby’s rank is expected to move to the No. 2 position.
Being a first class boxer and student, her opportunities are unlimited, but no matter what she decides, Gabby has proven to herself and others that when she puts her mind to it, she will achieve wonders.
