CROWLEY -- When you play in probably the toughest district in all of Class 2A football, getting wins in league play is a difficult challenge week in and week out.
Such is the case for the Ville Platte High. The Bulldogs moved down a class this year but moved up to the penthouse in terms of district opponents having to face the likes of Kinder, Welsh and Friday night’s opponent, Notre Dame.
That challenge has gotten the best to Ville Platte, as the Bulldogs fell to 0-3 in district competition after a 42-0 loss to the Pioneers. The Bulldogs are now 2-6 overall.
Notre Dame came into the game undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the Division III power ratings. And, against the Bulldogs, the Pioneers showed why they are considered an elite program.
Notre Dame amassed 352-yards of total offense in the game, while holding Ville Platte to only one net yard. The Bulldogs were shut down completely in the run game, as Notre Dame stymied the Ville Platte rushing attack, allowing a negative 49 yards on the ground.
The Pioneers were able to score their first touchdown on the night mid-way through the first quarter. With 8:31 left in the period, Collin Kirsch capped off a five play 34-yard drive when he plunged in from one yard out. John William Lamm tacked on the extra point for the 7-0 lead.
Notre Dame did not take long to add to their score, as 2:27 later, Cameron Nelson returned a Bulldog punt 58-yards for the score. The extra point was good from Lamm, giving the Pioneers a 14-0 lead.
Notre Dame added one more touchdown before the first quarter came to a close. At the 1:03 mark of the quarter, Noah Bourgeois scored on a three yard run that ended an eight play 54 yard drive. Once again the extra point was true and the Pioneers now held a 21-0 lead.
Notre Dame’s only score in the second quarter came with 10:57 left to go before half when Waylon Bourgeois took it into the end zone from four yards away. With the extra point, the Pioneers held a 28-0 lead as the teams headed into the locker room.
Notre Dame’s final two scores came in the third quarter. The first touchdown came on an 18 yard Kirsch run at the 2:54 mark. The second score followed only two and a half minutes later when Garrett Bergeron found Gentry Borill on an 18-yard pass play. With the extra points, the Pioneers had all of the points they needed.
Ville Platte will next travel to Gonzales to take on Ascension Catholic.
