‘Southern Fried Funeral’ captures top honors during annual Irving Awards

“Southern Fried Funeral” earned top honors at the 49th annual Eunice Player’s Theatre’s Irving Awards.
The play took home the Irving Award for Best Play, and earned Best Director awards for Sharon Blankenship and Amy Maricle in their directorial debut.
“Southern Fried Funeral” also won awards for Best Set, Hair and Makeup, and Best Supporting Actress.
The annual awards ceremony was held Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Liberty Theater.
The season’s first play, “A Comedy of Tenors” took home the prize for Best Actor and Best Cameo, while the show’s second season, “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery” won the award for Best Lighting and Sound, Best Costumes, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Actress.
The participants of the children’s summer show, “Romeo and Winifred” were recognized for their work on the show.
Brett Faulkner was awarded the Tim Wooten Memorial Award, presented by David Manuel, president of EPT and former Tim Wooten Memorial award winner, after having been nominated by Jody L. Powell, and voted upon unanimously by the Board of Directors. This prestigious award is granted to those who show exemplary service and commitment to the theatre, and has only been handed out 12 times in the theatre’s 49-year history.
The Best Set award went to “Southern Fried Funeral” with Brett Faulkner, Annette Harrington, Anne Harrington, Jeremy Faulkner, Nick Faulkner, Cooper Maricle, Cole Eddins and Lilly Blankenship.
Best Lighting and Sound was presented to “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery,” with Lauren Bourgeois and Amy Maricle.
Best Costumes award went to “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery” with Suzanne LaHaye, Debra Anding, Joan Cotner, Denise Fusilier and Jody L. Powell.
Best Hair and Makeup went to “Southern Fried Funeral” with Jasmine Douglas and Nikki LaCaze.
Best Cameo award was presented to “A Comedy of Tenors” with Lauren Bourgeois as The Maid.
Gabrielle Reed as Ozella Meeks in “Southern Fried Funeral” captured the Best Supporting Actress Award.
Wil Rougeau as Actor One won the Best Supporting Actor in “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery.”
Bonnie Pitre Kyzar as Actress One won the Best Actress award in “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery.”
The Best Actor award went to Mike Bourgeois as Tito Merelli and Beppo The Bellhop in “A Comedy of Tenors.”
Winning Best Directors were Sharon Blankenship and Amy Maricle in “Southern Fried Funeral.”
Capturing The Best Play of the season was “Southern Fried Funeral.”
