Coming soon, as an extension to the Eunice Community Gardens, will be a Children’s Sensory Garden.
It is currently in the beginning stages. The Children’s Sensory Garden will be designed and focused for children with special needs.
There will be different small projects inside the garden and all projects are put together by volunteer community members.
On the afternoon of June 1, two volunteers Gabe Fontenot and Josh Oyster, both of Basile, were putting together a wooden fence to separate the Sensory Garden from the Eunice Community Gardens. The materials for the fence was donated by a friend of the garden.
Three Eunice High School seniors Kiley Tauzin, Anna Bielstein and Saige Matte volunteered at the Eunice Community Gardens by planting small English Ivy cuttings into small plastic containers. These cuttings will begin its rooting process. Children will have the opportunity to experience a hands-on-project of planting an English ivy plant into 4-inch pots and bring home their completed project.
Director of the Eunice Community Gardens and Children’s Sensory Garden Randy Miller has placed “Cecile” the caterpillar inside the garden. Planted inside Cecile are growing Irish potato plants. He added, “The spines of Cecile don’t sting! We just want a fun and interactive space for children to enjoy.”
The Eunice Community Gardens is located behind the Department of Motor Vehicles at 2101 West Ash in Eunice.
Anyone wishing to volunteer, donate, or has questions, are asked to contact Miller at 337-580-2993.
