From a simple school program of recognizing and honoring the achievements of the women in the community of Sonoma, California in 1978 and in 1980 President Jimmy Carter issuing a presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8, 1980 as National Women’s History Week we come to the Eunice Branch National Association of University Women sponsoring their “Annual Women In History” Program.
During this time, women in the community of Eunice are recognized for their contributions to the development and building of the history of the city.
Chosen honorees for 2018 were those who have been of domestic and/or medical service to the community. They were April Guillory Leday, Paula Hebert Anderson, Gerrell Charles and Sevarine Rideau. These women have given years of dedicated service to neighbors, friends, family members and those who need them by being there to do domestic chores, cook, run errands, sit, read, listen and talk with them when needed, as well as attended to medical needs as medical appointments or medical attention in their home or hospital/extended care facility.
The program was held in the Southeast Neighborhood Center at 3 p.m., March 18.
Also honored was Denise Watkins Antoine, the Branch’s “2018 Woman-of-the-Year,” a competitive position in the South Central Section. She was chosen because of her dedication to the work she does on the Branch level as well as the Sectional and National levels.
Antoine is the outgoing president of four terms, presently serving as treasurer and the sectional nominating chairperson.
Assisting Emcee Chiquita M. Thomas on the program were Lelia Adams, Shelsy Williams, Patricia Harrison, Turquoise Guillory, Denise Antoine, Betty Jordan, committee chairperson; and Carolyn Baldwin, branch president. The Reverend Lloyd H. Antoine offered the prayers for the afternoon.
Honorees were presented gifts by the branch, family members, friends and a special proclamation from the City of Eunice by Councilwoman Germaine Simpson of Ward 2 on behalf of Mayor Scott Fontenot/
