St. Edmund Catholic School held Senior Awards Ceremony

St. Edmund Catholic High School held its Senior Awards Ceremony May 17.
Madison Cormier, class president, introduced and performed the passing of the candles to the junior class. She said, “Each year the passing of the candle plays a very important part in our ceremony. We, the seniors of 2018, give to you juniors our light. This is the light of knowledge, leadership, and most importantly the light of Christ. Carry it proudly because it lights the way for those who come after you.
“You are the new leaders of St. Edmund Catholic High School. Hold your light high, guard it carefully because it symbolizes both the joy and the responsibility of being the seniors of 2019.”
St. Edmund High honor graduates were honored.
Students receiving the honor of Summa Cum Laude have taken all honor courses offered at St. Edmund and have a cumulative grade point average of 4.0. Students who have taken all honor courses received a gold cord.
These students are Valedictorian Olivia McDaniel and Salutatorian Lauren Gabby Fontenot.
Students receiving the honor of Magna Cum Laude have taken all honor courses offered at St. Edmund and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.99-3.75. These students are Bethany Blaire Allain, Caroline Bollich, Madison Cormier, Maggie Larivierre, Olivia McDaniel, Olivia Schatzle and Katelyn Stagg.
Students receiving the honor of Cum Laude have taken all honor courses offered at St. Edmund and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.74- 3.50 are Mason Brown and Camille Leger.
Students receiving the honor of Distinguished Honor Student have taken some honor courses offered at St. Edmund and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above are Carter Andrus, Vivian Dubois, Abby Miller, Austin Miller and Logyn Soileau.
The student receiving the honor of Distinguished Student have taken no honor courses offered at St. Edmund and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above, Kaleb Prudhomme.
United Blood Services Red Cord Program Blood Heroes graduating with honors is designed to recognize students that help their community by donating blood their senior year. Any student who donates blood twice within their senior year is eligible to receive a red cord. United Blood Services presented the following students with a red cord: Caroline Bollich, Noah Clause, Madison Cormier, Vivian Dubois, AnnaDuplechain, Maggie Larriviere, Olivia McDaniel and Brooke Young.
The Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America. The designation “Eagle Scout” was founded over one hundred years ago. The fact that a boy is an Eagle Scout has always carried with it special significance, not only in Scouting, but also as he enters higher education, business or industry, and community service. The award is a performance-based achievement whose standards have been well-maintained over the years. Not every boy who joins a Boy Scout troop earns the Eagle Scout rank. Only five percent of all Boy Scouts do so. The Eagle Scout Honor Cord is awarded to Quinn Fruge.
The following students are recognized for scoring a 22 or higher on the ACT test. They are: Carter Andrus, Caroline Bollich, Mason Brown, Madison Cormier, Christian Fontenot, Lauren Gabbie Fontenot, Olivia McDaniel, Kaleb Prudhomme, Murphy Richard, Olivia Schatzle, Logyn Soileau and Katelyn Stagg.
Madison Cormier receive a plaque of recognition for service and leadership as student council president and a plaque for recognition as serving as the president of the senior class.
Olivia Schatzle received a plaque of recognition for her role as yearbook editor.
Mr. and Miss SEH is voted on by all high school teachers and the one girl and the one boy with most votes receive this honor. Mr. SEH is Murphy Richard and Miss SEH is Abby Miller.
The Senior Hall of Fame is voted on by all senior students and consists of a minimum of eight senior students to include four boys and four girls. The Senior Hall of Fame are Carter Andrus, Mason Brown, Madison Cormier, Lauren Gabrielle Fontenot, Phillip Fontenot, Quinn Fruge, Maggie Larriviere, William Manuel, Olivia McDaniel, Abby Miller and Murphy Richard.
Students with medal of recognition for maintaining the highest cumulative average in the different subject areas, mathematics, science, social studies and Spanish was awarded. Receiving this distinquished honor is Olivia McDaniel.
The Religion awards is given to one boy and one girl who have demonstrated and upheld the Christian values of faith. This years’ recipients are Murphy Richard and Olivia Schatzle.
The following students were recognized for their participation and placed in both the District Literary Rally and State Literary Rally.
In the District Literary Rally, first place winners receive a $50 per year LSU Eunice scholarship for the rallies held in both the 2016 and 2017 school years. For this school year, first place winners receive a $100 per year LSU Eunice scholarship. The 2018 District Literary Rally winners are:Madison Cormier, first place in World History, $100 per year.
Lauren Gabby Fontenot, first place in advanced math-pre-calculus, $100 per year.
Olivia McDaniel, second place in English IV.
Kaleb Prudhomme, first place in advance math: function and statistics, $100 per year.
Olivia Schatzle, first place in journalism, $100 per year.
The 2017 District Literary Rally winners are: Mason Brown, first place in algebra II, $50 per year.
Madison Cormier, first place in English III, $50 per year.
Christian Fontenot, first place in accounting, $50 per year.
Lauren Gabby Fontenot, first place in World Geography, $50 per year.
Maggie Larriviere, first place in chemistry, $50 per year.
Olivia McDaniel, first place in Spanish II, $50 per year.
The 2016 District Literary Rally winners are:

In the State Literary Rally, students who placed first received a gold medal, second place a silver medal, and third place a bronze medal. The 2017 State Literary Rally winners are Lauren Gabby Fontenot, third place in World History; and Christian Fontenot, third place in accounting.
Civic and college awards and scholarships were given to honored seniors at St. Edmund High.
Denis Bowie presented the Rodney Edmund Landreneau Jr. MD Memorial Award.
She added, “The Rodney Edmund Landreneau, Jr. M.D. Memorial award has been established to honor a senior who has demonstrated love, compassion, dedication, and service to our community. In addition, the senior must have performed well in Foreign Language, history, and science, and participated in athletics. This year’s recipient is Bethany Blaire Allain.”
The Ross Andrus Memorial Scholarship has been established to assist a deserving student who will be attending a technical college and is valued at $1,000. The scholarship was presented to Noah Clause, in memory of Ross Andrus, St. Edmund Class of 2008.
The Tony Fuselier Memorial Scholarship, in loving memory of Mr. Tony Fuselier, St. Edmund Class of 1971 is in the amount of $500 and was presented this year to Brooke Young.
The Woodman of the World Award American History Award, which is given to the student who has the highest average in American History. This year, there was a three-way tie. This award was presented to Lauren Gabby Fontenot, Olivia McDaniel and Maggie Larriviere.
Roger Veillon, commander at the VFW Post 8971, presented the VFW scholarship to a student, the recipient was Olivia McDaniel. The scholarship was in the amount of $1,000.
Candace Reeves, of the Eunice Junior Auxiliary, presented a scholarship of $250 to Maggie Larriviere.
The St. Edmund Parent Teacher Club Academic Scholarships in the amount of $250 each were presented to Olivia McDaniel as the valedictorian and to Lauren Gabby Fontenot as the salutatorian of the St. Edmund Class of 2018.
The Eunice Kiwanis Club Scholarship in the amount of $500 each went to St. Ed senior Abby Miller.
The St. Landry Landry Parish Hospital Service District Scholarships are scholarships given to two students who plan to pursue careers in the field of medicine in the amount of $500 for each student. This year, these awards went to Lauren Gabby Fontenot and Olivia McDaniel.
The Bayou Des Cannes Water System Glen Mentel Scholarship Award in the amount of $800 was presented to Camille Leger.
The Captain Jim Smith Award, a $300 cash award given by John and Connie Baham of Eunice, went to Brooklynn Miller.
The Pedestal Bank of Eunice award in the amount of $150 was presented to Valedictorian Olivia McDaniel and to our Salutatorian Lauren Gabby Fontenot in the amount of $100.
The JD Bank of Eunice scholarship in the amount of $400 went to Maggie Larriviere.
The Hannah Landreneau Eunice Mardi Gras Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $200 went to Anna Duplechain.
The Lowes’ Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $20,000 went to Olivia McDaniel.
The Martin Luther King Scholarship in the amount of $500 went to Olivia McDaniel.
Bob Fontenot with Eunice Rotary Club presented two scholarships from Rotary Club of $500 each, which is sent directly to the LSUE bookstore. Olivia McDaniel and Quinn Fruge were the recipients.

Olivia McDaniel received the Centennial Honor Scholarship of $4,000 and the Elizabeth Stark Faust Memorial Scholarship of $3,000.
Olivia Schatzle received the $2,000 Dr. Gladys Peck Memorial Scholarship.
Katelyn Stagg was the recipient of the $1,000 Dr. Claude Oubre Memorial Scholarship.
Student scholarships from different colleges and establishments in various amounts were given to graduating seniors.
McNeese State University, the Academic Excellence Scholarship in the amount of $9,600 went to Caroline Bollich.
The University of Louisiana at Monroe, Academic Recognition Scholarship in the amount of $22,000 went to Olivia McDaniel.
Maddie Cormier received the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Academic Recognition Scholarship of $14,000 and ULM Cheer Squad Scholarship, value to be determined $900 to $1,200.
Katelyn Stagg received the Louisiana State University at Alexandria Academic Scholarship in the amount of $4,000 and the McNeese State University Academic Excellence Scholarship in the amount of $9,600.
The State of Louisiana awards Full Tuition Scholarships to those students who have attended qualified schools for at least two years prior to graduation.
These awards are contingent on the State of Louisiana’s financial budget each year. Provided that the state has money to be allocated to TOPS for the next fiscal year, the following students are anticipated to receive TOPS Scholarships based on the current school data. The State of Louisiana still must verify student grades and issue final TOPS GPA’s.
Students who have earned a 2.5 TOPS grade point average in the TOPS Core Curriculum and scored at least 20 on the ACT are awarded the TOPS Opportunity scholarship, which includes tuition. The following students are anticipated to receive this award: Madison Cormier, Vivian Dubois, Emily Fontenot, Laura Fruge, Quinn Fruge, Maggie Larivierre, Camille Leger, William Manuel and Murphy Richard.
Students who have earned a 3.0 TOPS grade point average in the TOPS Core Curriculum and scored at least 23 on the ACT are awarded the TOPS Performance scholarship. This includes full tuition, certain fees, and $400 a year. The following students are anticipated to receive this award: Carter Andrus, Caroline Bollich, Mason Brown, Christian Fontenot, Lauren Gabby Fontenot, Olivia McDaniel, Kaleb Prudhomme, Olivia Schatzle, Logyn Soileau and Katelyn Stagg.
The Beverly Wyble Memorial Award is given to a female student who has the highest academic average and who participated in two sports and the Stanislaus Wyble Memorial Award, which goes to a male student with the highest academic average and who has participated in two sports.
This year, the Beverly Wyble Award’s recipient is Lauren Gabby Fontenot, and the Stanislaus Wyble Award went to Carter Andrus.
The Shelby John Manuel Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $100 is awarded to a deserving senior by St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and this years’s recipient is Bethany Blaire Allain.
David Crader of the American Legion presented The American Legion awards. This year’s recipients are Abby Miller and Murphy Richard for exhibiting character, courage, scholarship, leadership and service.
The service scholarship awards are in the amount of $200 each. These are given to young people who have served the St. Anthony Church community faithfully as altar servers from the fifth grade through their senior year. Lauren Gabby Fontenot, Camille Leger, Abby Miller, Austin Miller and Brooke Young were the recipients.
The Distinguished Service Award is presented to one senior student who has rendered four years of generous service to St. Edmund. The senior class votes on the recipient, then the top two boys’ and the top two girls’ names are submitted to the faculty for all high school teachers to select one student from the nominees chosen by the senior class.
The 2018 Distinguished Service Award recipient is Abby Miller.
