The St. Landry Parish School Board approved a charter school application for Helix Community Schools at its meeting on Thursday.
The unanimous approval is for a Type 1 charter school that will report to the School Board and receive state Minimum Foundation Program funds.
Preston Castille, a St. Landry Parish native, heads the new school, which operates campuses in Baton Rouge.
