Downtown to feature classic cars, trucks

Downtown Eunice will feature classic cars and trucks for the Spring Into Summer Car Show & Touch-A-Truck on Saturday.
Attendance is free for the public.
Event organizer Mark Denette said some estimates are $10 million worth vehicles are on display during the show held from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The show attracts enthusiasts from Texas to Mississippi who pay a $30 registration fee for a chance to show off their vehicles that are at least 40 years old.
Denette said classic vehicles are the main feature of the show, but some newer models such as Corvettes will be on display.
Just how many vehicles will be on the streets is not certain, but Denette said previous years have attracted from 150 to 200 cars and trucks.
The participants have a chance to win one of 120 awards provided by Eunice businesses, Denette said. They also receive an event T-shirt and commemorative dash plate keepsake.
Denette stressed the show helps fund Eunice Main Street and last year he estimates it raised about $7,000.
Denette, who is mayor of Basile, said fundraisers such as Saturday’s show are important to a city. “They can pay for bands, they can pay for whatever, fun jumps, but it keeps Mardi Gras and Christmas and stuff like that free for everybody to attend,” he said.
The show stretches from Park Avenue to South 2nd Street and will include big rigs, emergency vehicles, tractors, and trucks at the Touch-A-Truck event, held near City Hall. Children will be allowed to explore the vehicles.
The event also includes food vendors and local artisans, crafts, and specialty items.
Downtown businesses will be open during the show, according to Alicia Mire, Eunice tourism and Main Street director.
