Top reader at Eunice Elementary. Eunice Elementary recently honored its Top Accelerated Reader. Kade Bertrand, a third grader, reached his 100 million word count. The school presented him with a trophy for his outstanding reading accomplishment. His teacher is Holly Bertrand.
Students of the Week at Glendale Elementary. Glendale Elementary honored its Students of the Week for April 27 to May 1. The LSUE baseball team is escorted out of Bengal Village Thursday on their way to the junior college world series in Enid, Okla.
The defending champions were to open competition at 4 p.m. Saturday against Monroe Community College.
East Pre-k students learn gun safety. Warden John Cormier with the Eunice Police Department visited the East Elementary pre-k class. He spoke to students regarding the importance of gun safety. Pre-k teachers are Gena Daigle, Sophia Cole, Patricia Langley and Bernadette Poullard.
Pizza party at Highland Elementary. Patricia Harrison’s fourth grade class at Highland Elementary enjoyed pizza, candy and drinks delivered to them by Anthony “Kip” Bertrand, vice president of Basile State Bank in Eunice, and a Rotary member. Eunice Rotarians awards a pizza party to classes collecting the most canned goods at each Eunice elementary school. The food drive is is held annually in December in conjunction with Brookshire Foods (Super 1) Spirit of Christmas Food Drive.
Blue Jay seniors earn Academic All-State honors. St. Edmund senior pitcher Mac Manuel earned a perfect 4.0 GPA and earned a spot on the Class 1-A Academic All-State along with five other Blue Jay senior team mates. Those team mates are Taylor Eval, Tyler McGee, Tyler Rodriguez, Trevor Hargroder, and Edward Turk.

A rush for home-grown vegetables. Lois Dietz, blue blouse at left, checks the scales for the weight of tomatoes being purchased by one of a throng of customers at the vegetable and baked goods stands she and her husband Ed had at the opening of the Farmer’s Market at this past Wednesday.
Vendors also had freshly picked berries, lettuce, and newly dug Irish potatoes, as well as watermelons and cantaloupe. The variety will grow as the harvest season deepens.
The market is held on Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning on South Second Street.
