Eunice Police are in the possession of 534,000 Iraqi dinars after a man turned them into Basile State Bank.
There are 105 5,000 dinar notes and nine 1,000 dinar notes, he said.
Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot said the bills are not damaged.
A man, who was not identified, found the bills in a envelope two to three months ago, Fontenot said.
The man noticed the envelop because his dog was chewing on it in the backyard, he said.
After the man brought the money into the bank, police were notified by the bank manager, he said.
The FBI also has been notified.
There was no explanation for the delay between finding the dinars and reporting them.
Fontenot speculated the money may have been brought back from Iraq by someone serving there who may have been the victim of  a burglary.
But that’s only speculation.
After six months, if the money is not claimed, the police department may end up owning the 534,000 dinars.
Fontenot estimated the notes are worth about $500.
