Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot advises extra precaution this 4th of July holiday when using fireworks.
He added, “Please use caution when using fireworks paying attention to areas with tall grass or dry areas which easily ignite. Never allow small children to handle the fireworks and teach older children to always use proper safety techniques when lighting fireworks, never holding them while lighting.
“When using fireworks that are propelled, always poiunt them away from structures and consider your neighbors safety as well.
Chief Fontenot gave suggestions on a route to be taken to watch annual 4th of July fireworks showing in Eunice. He said, “If you are planning to drive to the recreation complex on July 4 to watch the fireworks show, know that Sittig Road will be closed at E. Ardoin St. (Old Crowley Road).
“Sittig Road will be designated as a one way road only accessible from College Road/ Louis Street and LSUE Drive. This is to be done to avoid or minimize congestion. After the show, traffic on Sittig Road east of College Road/Louis St. and from the recreation Center will be directed east bound to E. Ardoin St. Traffic on Sittig Road west of College Road/Louis Street will be directed west to LSUE Dr. Once the Sittig Road traffic has cleared, traffic leaving the park will be allowed to exit in either direction.
Chief Fontenot advised of those people who wish to pop fireworks can do so inside the city limits between the dates of June 25 through July 5, between the times of 10 a.m until 10:30 p.m.
He added, “We ask that everyone remain mindful of areas where elderly people reside as they usually tend to go to sleep earlier in the evenings and fireworks could disturb them. Please be courteous.
“Also be careful the direction you point propelled fireworks, not pointing toward fields are areas with tall grass, point away from houses, buildings and people.”
