Blood drives in Eunice, Opelousas
The public is asked to donate blood at two events for the Our Lady of Lourdes Donor Center.
The blood drives will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Delta Grand Theater, 120 Market St., Opelousas, and at the Eunice Municipal Complex, 300 S. 2nd St., Eunice.
The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office is pairing with Eunice and Opelousas police in blood drives noted as “Donate for bragging rights.”
Donors are asked to bring photo identification and eat before donating.
UBS drive set May 25 at Walmart
Blood donations are needed now to prepare for Memorial Day weekend blood needs.
The United Blood Services mobile will be in Eunice from 2 to 6 p.m. May 25 at the Walmart parking lot in Eunice. Red cell, plasma and platelet donations are needed now to help secure the blood supply for Memorial Day holiday weekend blood needs. All blood types are needed, especially type O-negative, as it is the most transfused type in emergency situations.
Each donor will receive a patriotic T-shirt and bonus points for a free movie ticket through the online reward store, which can be accessed at bloodhero.com.
Memorial Day ceremony set May 28
The public is invited to a Memorial Day service at 5 p.m. May 28 in Eunice at South 2nd and Park Avenue near the fountain.
The honorary ceremony is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars 8971, DAV and the American Legion Post 129 in Eunice.
A Boy Scout troop will perform a flag-raising ceremony and a bell will be rung to those who died in war time service.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, balloons will be released.

Memorial Day
breakfast
Members of the Eunice Branch of the National Association of University Women invite veterans and their families to a breakfast at 10 a.m. on May 28 Memorial Day, in the Southeast Neighborhood Center in Honor and Recognition of the fallen soldiers who have given the ultimate price of serving their country, their lives.
The 10 a.m. breakfast is free and there will be a short program.

Cajuns at Liberty
The Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler Au Rendez-Vous De Cajuns is scheduled at the Liberty every from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday with live entertainment.
The Liberty opens at 4 p.m. the show begins at 6 p.m.

The Liberty performance admission is $5 at the door.
Summer Reading program registration
The Eunice Public Library will have its Summer Reading program and registration is set for May 29 and last date to regsiter is July 2.
StoryTime hours designed for children are to begin Wednesday, June 6, at 10:39 a.m. upstairs in the children’s library. Children will be able to listen to a story, create a craft, eat a snack, win door prizes. Other dates of StoryTime are June 20, June 27, July 11, and July 18.
Elementary Pre-k registration dates set
All Eunice elementary schools (East, Eunice, Glendale and Highland) are conducting pre-k registration. Visit your child’s zoned school to sign up for a testing date.
In order to be eligible for Pre-k, a child must be four (4) years old on or before Sept. 30.
The following documents will be required on your child’s testing day to register for Pre-k:
–Child’s birth certificate
–Child’s immunization record (current)
–Proof of residency (utility bill with parents name and address)
–Proof of income: Bring one of the following:
Two consecutive check stubs, SNAP verification letter.
Concealed handgun classes offered
Non-profit classes for a concealed handgun permit are scheduled June 23, July 21, Aug. 18, Sept. 15, Oct. 13, Nov. 10, and Dec. 8, at the Masonic Lodge, 211 W. Park Ave., Eunice, according to an announcement from Maj. Eddie Thibodeaux of the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The courses include all the requirements needed for application to the state for a carrying a concealed handgun, but does not include the state fee.
The course cost $100 and a spouse may attend for another $80.
Classes start at 7:30 a.m. and include classroom instruction, applications, notary, fingerprints, firing range, a hot lunch, refreshments all day, and a certificate of completion as required by the state.
The course is taught by certified police instructors.
Participants should bring a photo identification, cash or check, handgun and a box of ammunition.

IHS All Sports Backers fundraiser
The Iota High School All Sports Backers fundraiser, named “Prize-a-Palooza,” is underway.
Anyone who purchases a ticket has a chance to win one or more of 31 prizes.
Tickets are $50 each and only 1,000 will be sold.
Tickets can be purchase from any athlete at Iota High or at the IHS front office.
A drawing will be held every day, and coincide with the Pick Three numbers in July.

Free installation of child car safety seats is being offered from 4 to 6 p.m. every Monday at Word Ministries, 1960 W. Laurel Ave., Eunice.
The seats will be installed by a nationally certified technicians.
Saturday programs at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center
Saturday programs at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center, 250 W. Park Ave., Eunice, are the Explore & Restore craft workshop for kids, from 10 a.m. to noon; Cajun Conversations meets 1 to 2:30 p.m. to learn and practice conversational Cajun French; Music and dancing kicks off at 2:45 p.m. and ends with the cooking demonstration and sampling at 4 p.m. Admission to the center and programs is free.

VFW bingo held Thursdays, Sundays
The VFW Post 8971 holds bingo for the public at 7 p.m. every Thursday and Sunday at the VFW Hall located on U.S. 190 East. All proceeds from Bingo games goes back to the community.
