Voter registration deadlines listed
Cheryl Milburn, St. Landry Parish registrar of voters, has announced that the last day to register to vote in person or by mail for the Oct. 12 election will be Sept. 11.
The deadline for GeauxVote.com online electronic registration will be Sept. 21.
Persons interested in participating in the upcoming election must register to vote and make any change to their records by this deadline.
Registration applications may be completed at the registrar’s office in Suite 114 at the St. Landry Parish Courthouse, 118 S. Court St., Opelousas. You must be 18 or turn 18 by the date of the election. Additionally, individuals can pick up mail-in registration forms at city halls, banks, and libraries in the different municipalities and online at GeauxVote.com. These forms must be postmarked or submitted by the Sept. 11.
Beginning March 1 if a person is on probation or parole for conviction of a felony, they may register and vote if they have not been incarcerated pursuant to that order within the last five years..
Convicted Felons who are suspended must do the following to be reinstated: submit a registration application to update their voter registration record prior to the 30 day deadline or online by the 20 day deadline; appear in person afterward to submit the certified document form showing you are eligible to register. If you are submitting the voter registration application in person at registrar of voters office, they can submit the certified document form at the same time. But they must still submit the application prior to the 30-day deadline.

CFMA Acadiana Chapter scholarship
The CFMA (Cajun French Music Association) Acadiana Charter Chapter will award a $500 scholarship starting with the fall semester, $250 per semester. Applicants need to write a 500 word essay telling us why they should be awarded the scholarship and tell us what they know about the Cajun culture and why it is important to keep the present generation involved in our culture.
A transcript of their grades from the last school attended and proof that they are enrolled for the fall semester needs to be included.
Deadline to apply is Aug. 5. Information can be mailed to CFMA, P.O. Box 1427, Eunice, LA 70535 or brought to Greg Brown or Beverly Vidrine.
Individuals already attending colleges are eligible also, you do not have to be a recent high school graduate.

St. Louis Cemetery asking for donations
The St. Louis Cemetery, located at the corner of St. Louis Road and Sittig in Eunice is seeking donations for the upkeep and maintenance of the cemetery. The cemetery strictly operates by donations and volunteers. The cemetery is not a private one.
Families who wish to donate are asked to send to Keith Lavergne, cemetery manager, at St. Louis Cemetery, P.O. Box 325, Eunice, LA 70535.

Player’s Theatre to hold auditions
Eunice Players’ Theatre will hold auditions for the third play of the 50th season, “Crimes Of The Heart” from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Wednesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 27.
Director Jody L. Powell needs four women and two men, age range 20s to 30s, to fill the cast. More people are needed to assist with set decoration, backstage duties, costuming, etc.
Auditions for this touching family comedy, written by Beth Henley, are open to everyone who wants to get involved with their local community theatre, regardless of prior acting experience.
Auditions will be at the theatre, 121 S. 2nd St. Rehearsals will begin in August, with the show running in mid-September.

United Way/Women United presents event
United Way/Women United will present “Men Who Wait on Women Who Wine”, from 6 until 10 p.m. Saturday at the Opelousas Civic Center.
Tickets are $40 and all proceeds go to benefit the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a child literacy program that has placed 98,000 books in the hands of young children in our community, ages up to 5 since its launch in 2008. This program was started in Eunice by the late Ms. Jean McManus.
This event promises to be an evening of fun as elected officials and community leaders serve up a delicious meal, entertain, and compete for tips and the title of “Head Waiter.”
A Silent Auction will be included, as well as live entertainment; and the “Man with Heart” award will be bestowed on a St. Landry Parish and an Evangeline Parish man recognized for their generous and compassionate heart and community engagement.

Farmers Market at DMV parking lot
The Eunice Farmers’ Market is held in the DMV parking lot, and normally is open from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturdays.
However, on the third Saturday of each month the market is joined by outside vendors and the market remains open until 3 p.m. The market always has fresh produce, honey, and canned goods. On third Saturdays there are also baked goods and arts and crafts.

Rolling crops field tour set for today
BUNKIE — A rolling crops field tour by the LSU AgCenter along with state and federal agencies will be held today in St. Landry and Avoyelles parishes.
Participants in the event will include the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
The tour will start at Nutrien Ag Solutions near Bunkie at 1970 La. 29. LSU AgCenter vehicles will be provided for traveling to five locations, with departure no later than 8:05 a.m.
The stops will include the James Deshotel farm near Bunkie for presentations on sweet potatoes; the Steele tree farm near Bunkie; the Charles Fontenot farm near Palmetto for rice and soybeans; Delano Plantation for cattle and hay; and the Cannatella farm near Melville for corn and sugarcane.

LSUE Testing Center offers HiSET exam
The Testing Center on the LSU Eunice campus has expanded its offerings after being named a HiSET (GED) testing site.
The HiSET exam is a test used to measure high school equivalency skills. It is designed for out-of-school youth and adults without a high school diploma.
The LSUE Testing Center added HiSET and CLEP to its lineup of exams that it proctors. LSUE also offers Accuplacer, Peregrine, TEAS, and proctored exams for LSUE and non-LSUE college students.
The Center is open Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and is located on the first floor of the LSUE LeDoux Library.

Rendez-Vous De Cajuns at Liberty
The Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler Au Rendez-Vous De Cajuns is scheduled at the Liberty every from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday with live entertainment.
The Liberty opens at 4 p.m. the show begins at 6 p.m.

Hour of Prayer at New Zion Baptist Church
The New Zion Missionary Baptist Church invites the public to an Hour of Power Prayer every Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the J.G. Frank, Senior Christian Life Center, located at 251 Nimitz in Eunice.
On the third Thursday of each month, senior citizens are invited to fellowship with a meal immediately following the prayer service.

Joseph Celestine/Rosenwald reunion
The Joseph Celestine/Rosenwald School committee will be extending an invitation to its 11th biennial reunion. The reunion is open to those who have attended Joseph Celestine High School or Rosenwald School.

Free amplified telephones and hearing aids are available to Louisiana residents. The program is funded by a state agency, Louisiana Commission for the Deaf.

The City of Eunice is selling Clovis Crawfish books by Mary Alice Fontenot as a fundraiser connected to the city’s 125th anniversary.

DAV volunteer drivers needed
The DAV (Disabled American Veterans) is in dire need of volunteer drivers to drive veterans from Eunice to Alexandria.

Free child car seat installation
Free installation of child car safety seats is being offered from 4 to 6 p.m. every Monday at Word Ministries, 1960 W. Laurel Ave., Eunice.
The seats will be installed by a nationally certified technicians.

VFW bingo held Thursdays, Sundays
The VFW Post 8971 holds bingo for the public at 7 p.m. every Thursday and Sunday at the VFW Hall located on U.S. 190 East. All proceeds from Bingo games goes back to the community.

Evangeline Parish adult education classes
The Evangeline Parish adult education classes will be offered from 5 to 8 p.m. every Monday at the Basile police station.

A foundation has been set for the St Landry Parish Veteran Funeral Honor Guard and now it needs donations to become a reality, according to Lincoln “Link” Savoie, coordinator.
