Bible Marathon in Opelousas
The “Jubilee of the Word” Bible Marathon began at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and continues through Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 747 N. Union St., Opelousas.
Three-hundred volunteer lectors will read the entire Bible, front to back, 24 hours a day, in 20-minute shifts. The event is a celebration of the tricentennial of the City of Opelousas and the centennial of Holy Ghost Catholic Church.
Guest lectors include Bishop Douglas Deshotel, Bishop Emeritus Michael Jarrell, Gov. John Bel Edwards, Attorney General Jeff Landry, Opelousas Mayor Julius Alsandor and Zydeco star Geno Delafose.
Black History Day and Heritage parade
The Eunice Community Black History Committee will present its first Black Heritage parade beginning at 1 p.m. and Black Heritage Festival on Saturday at the Southeast Community pavilion, located at 101 City Avenue in Eunice.
There will also be Black History activities beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Unity Church of God In Christ located at 1220 Maple Avenue.
A Black History Program will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Unity Church of God in Christ.

LSUE Performing Arts free concert
LSUE Performing Arts Series and the Student Government Association will present a free concert celebrating Black History Month at 6 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium of the Health Tech Building.
Of Ebony Embers is a music theater work performed by an actor and a pianist. Their program celebrates the work and lives of famous African American poets, painters, muralists, musicians and much more.
Concealed carry class planned
The St Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office is holding a one-day concealed carry class at 7:30 a.m. Feb. 29 at 211 W. Park Ave., Eunice.
The course is $100 dollars and $80 for an additional spouse. The course includes fingerprints, notary or online help, application, classroom, range, and a hot Cajun meal. The course is taught by the certified police training staff of the sheriff’s office with over 70 years of police, military, and civilian training.

All proceeds go to local charities and the course is non-profit. In the past donations have included Shriners, eye and speech foundations, dyslexia foundations, community health units and youth charities.
Players’ Theatre to hold auditions
To kick off its 51st season, Eunice Players’ Theatre will hold auditions for “Cheaters”, a two-act comedy by Michael Jacobs.
Auditions will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m., today at the theater at 121 S. Second St.
Director Jody L. Powell needs three women and three men, age range 20s to 60s, to fill the cast. More people are needed to assist with set decoration, backstage duties, costuming, etc.
Auditions are open to everyone who wants to get involved with their local community theatre, regardless of prior acting experience.

OGHS Foundation plans golf tournament
OPELOUSAS — Registration is open for the 14th Annual OGHS Foundation Golf Tournament scheduled April 6 at Farm D’Allie Golf Club in Carencro.
The shotgun start begins at noon. Each four-man team will receive a complimentary registration gift and will be competing for first, second and third place cash awards as well as a Par 3 Poker prize. Special to the tournament this year is a helicopter ball drop, which will take place at 11:45 a.m. for a chance to win $1,000.
Support for the tournament enables the OGHS Foundation to provide scholarships to students in St. Landry Parish. Since 2006, the OGHS foundation has awarded over 100 scholarships to students in the health care field.

CDA meeting set March 2
The Catholic Daughters of Americas (CDA) will hold a meeting at 6 p.m. March 2 at the Jeanmard Hall.

Season tickets on sale for Players’ Theatre
Eunice Players’ Theatre now has season tickets for their 51st season on sale.
Single tickets are $30 for a single ticket; $100 for a Patron (4 tickets), and $150 for an Angel (6 tickets).
Season ticket holders have access to Players’ reservation line, the three main shows for the season (it does not include the summer workshop), and a ballot and invitation to the next Irving Awards.
The names of Patrons and Angels are included on every main shows’ program.

Youth Retreat at ABC set Feb. 28
“Spring Break Discipleship-Now” is coming to Acadian Baptist Center Feb. 28-March 1 at the ABC campus near Richard.

Eunice native to speak about prison camps
John Francois will present a program on Union prison camps during the Civil War at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 29, at the Young-Sanders Center in Franklin.
Francois, a resident of Lafayette and native of Eunice, served in the United States Navy. After his military career ended he taught social studies for the Department of Defense schools at American military bases in Canada, and in Germany.

The lecture is open to the public with no fee for attending. Young-Sanders Center is located one block from the St. Mary Parish Court House at 701 Teche Drive.

35th annual Beef Cook-off set March 7
The 35th Annual St. Landry Parish Cattlemen’s Association Beef Cookoff is scheduled for March 7 at the St. Landry Parish Ag Arena behind Yambilee Building in Opelousas.
There will be many beef categories, a trail ride, live music, and more.
A portion of the proceeds will go to the Opelousas Lions Club.

Mt. Olive Cemetery volunteers needed
Families of the Mount Olive Cemetery, located at 1199 E. Ardoin (on Old Crowley Road), are in dire need of volunteers for lawn maintenance, grass mowing, and up keep of the cemetery. It is a public cemetery, established many years ago.
Family members of families buried at this cemetery are asked to help in the upkeep.

St. Louis Cemetery asking for donations
The St. Louis Cemetery, located at the corner of St. Louis Road and Sittig in Eunice is seeking donations for the upkeep and maintenance of the cemetery. The cemetery strictly operates by donations and volunteers. The cemetery is not a private one.

Prairie Acadian Cultural Center to exhibit Soileau’s art
The Prairie Acadian Cultural Center of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve is presenting an art exhibit featuring the work of Acadian artist Seaux N. Seau (Geraldine ) Soileau.
“Seaux N. Seau’s Perspective” will be on view Feb. 15 through April 29.

Soileau was raised on the bank of Bayou Teche and learned to paint looking over her father’s shoulder. Her nickname “Seaux N. Seau” came from her love of sewing. Soileau enjoys capturing Cajun and Creole culture in folk art, often inspired by stories her parents and grandparents told her as a child.
The center is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday-Friday and on Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The center is closed on all federal holidays but open on Mardi Gras. Admission to the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center is free and all activities and demonstrations are free and open to the public.
Hour of Prayer at New Zion Baptist Church
The New Zion Missionary Baptist Church invites the public to an Hour of Power Prayer every Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the J.G. Frank, Senior Christian Life Center, located at 251 Nimitz in Eunice.
On the third Thursday of each month, senior citizens are invited to fellowship with a meal immediately following the prayer service.

The DAV (Disabled American Veterans) is in dire need of volunteer drivers to drive veterans from Eunice to Alexandria.

Free child car seat installation
Free installation of child car safety seats is being offered from 4 to 6 p.m. every Monday at Word Ministries, 1960 W. Laurel Ave., Eunice.
The seats will be installed by a nationally certified technicians.
VFW bingo held Thursdays, Sundays
The VFW Post 8971 holds bingo for the public at 7 p.m. every Thursday and Sunday at the VFW Hall located on U.S. 190 East. All proceeds from Bingo games goes back to the community.
