Fifty-four more roads are to be paved in the final phase of the Smooth Ride Home Program.
St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot announced at a Parish Council meeting Wednesday that Prairie Contractors Inc., of Opelousas, was the apparent low bidder for Phase 3B.
The company bid $7,890,083.60 to pave about 40 miles of road in the program funded by a 2 percent sales tax in rural St. Landry Parish.
“We are upgrading our roads to a standard that will last for many, many years to come; this is work that has been needed for decades,” Fontenot said in a news release.
Prairie Contractors is the apparent low bidder. Fontenot said the parish engineer must review the bid to make sure it meets all requirements, but he added in the news release that with a company such as Prairie Contractors, that should be just a formality.

In 2013, voters approved the tax for the road program.
Other bids were Elliott Construction, LLC, of Grand Coteau, $10,545,006; Diamond B Construction Co., of Alexandria, $8,624,463; and Coastal Bridge Company, LLC, of Baton Rouge, $7,991,640.
