About 18% of the 60,323 voters registered for the Tuesday’s election cast ballots in early voting.
Cheryl Milburn, registrar of voters, said the early voting count is historic.
Early voting ended Tuesday and Milburn said voters who had lined up outside the courthouse in Opelousas were allowed in to vote until about 8:30 p.m.
She estimates about 65% of the parish’s registered voters will vote in the November election.
There were 2,282 early votes cast in Eunice and 8,478 people voted in Opelousas.
“This was history,” Milburn said of the early voting turnout.
There were 10 days of early voting for the Nov. 3 election, which is three more than normally scheduled.
Total votes in St. Landry Parish as of Tuesday were 13,227, which would include absentee ballots.
In the state, 964,181 early votes were cast. Of those, 817,897 were cast in person.
