Acadia Parish jurors to seek bids on jail equipment

There was a lot of discussion but few recommendations coming out of committee meetings of the Acadia Parish Police Jury Tuesday night.
Committees met following a brief special meeting of the full jury held to rectify action taken in January to purchase a central monitoring system server for the Acadia Parish Jail.
Secretary-Treasurer A.J. “Fatty” Broussard explained that the initial plan was to ‘piggy-back” the purchase with that of another parish through state contract.
“But they’re wanting to buy the entire system whereas all we need here is the server — the ‘brain’ of the system,” Broussard said. “We found out that we can’t piggy-back it like that.”
He said the price tag will remain the same, but the jury will need to authorize Requests for Proposals for the server.
One recommendation coming out of Tuesday night’s meetings was from the Airport Committee.
The jury will consider Professional Engineering Consultants Corp. to provide engineering services for LeGros Memorial Airport based on the results of the qualifications rating sheet.
The Road and Bridges Committee will recommend that the jury approve the purchase of equipment for the parish road crews.
Micheal “Pee Wee” Schexnider explained that funding for the equipment had been budgeted for purchase this fiscal year.
Equipment includes two mini-excavators, a rubber-tire excavator, a pothole patcher and a pick-up truck (for herbicide spraying).
Brad Andrus, legal counsel, will be busy if other recommendations are ultimately approved by the full jury during its Wednesday, Feb. 14 meeting.
The Legislative Committee is asking that the jury authorize Andrus to research and provide written criteria for the establishment of a Hazardous Road Ordinance.
Also, the Road and Bridges Committee wants the attorney to research the legality of the police jury entering into an intergovernmental agreement with the Sixth Ward Drainage District and the City of Crowley to provide funding to stop erosion of Crowley Center Ditch at East Fifth Street.
The Legislative committee also will ask the full jury to call a for a public hearing to discuss possible amendments to the parish’s permit ordinance concerning electrical reconnect permits and fees for irrigation wells, action that will likely involve the parish attorney.
