Alderwoman: Bag that trash

Body

Alderwoman Germaine Simpson has a request for Eunice residents and it is simple: Bag your trash.
That request is not new coming from Simpson.
But she brought it up again at Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen’s meeting.
Noting that the automated garbage pickup has been going on for about two years, Simpson said that when the cans are picked up and emptied into the trucks: “If the wind blows the trash goes all over.”
City crews recently cleaned an area before a trash pickup and after it occurred there was trash all over the place because the trash was not bagged, she said.
“If it continues to be a problem I’m going to introduce an ordinance ...” she said. The ordinance would be to require trash be bagged before being placed in cans.
Simpson said she will be watching the trash situation in the next two months to see if an ordinance is necessary.
Simpson also reminded people renting the city’s community centers that they are not to leave tape, glue, staples and other items. If they do leave those items they will not get the $200 deposit returned, she said.
The Northwest Center rental fee is $425 and the Southeast Center rents for $325.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting:
— A zoning board recommendation to rezone a lot from R-1 to B-1, located between Park Avenue and Betty Street and by the Richard Gulley on the east, was approved.
— Approved a liquor license for Jacque Romero and Richard Cormier for Rocky’s Cajun Kitchen.
— Approved 2019 millage rates of 6.77 for general alimony and 5 for street maintenance. The rates are unchanged from the current millage.
— Approved abandoning the alley between the new Washington State Bank and Our Savior’s Church and between 10th and 11th streets. The bank will use the alley for an exit to U.S. 190.
