St. Edward Church in Richard once again invites the public to attend the Annual Mass of Petition for Charlene Marie Richard, “the little Cajun Saint,” which is set for Friday.
A rosary will be recited in church at 5:30 p.m., and Mass will begin at 6 p.m.
The main celebrant for this year’s Mass will be Bishop Douglas Deshotel.
Richard was born in 1947 and, after having been diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia, died on Aug. 11, 1959, at the age of 12. Before she died, she would offer all her daily suffering and prayers up to God for the benefit of others.
According to the chaplain of the hospital where Richard lived her last days, Fr. Joseph Brennan, “I see Charlene as a witness for people of all ages to the power of resignation and acceptance of God’s will. She wasn’t different in any way except that when the crisis came in her life — and it came very early — she accepted it with faith and trust and love.”
People continue to visit Richard grave side to ask for intercession and their prayers continue to be answered, and her cause for beatification is being considered.
