Anti-human trafficking event scheduled

The St. Landry – Evangeline Anti-human Trafficking Task Force will educate the community on human trafficking during National Crime Prevention Week.
The event will be held at 6 p.m. April 10 at the Delta Grand Theater in Opelousas. Screening of the documentary “Not My Life” will begin at 6 p.m. followed by speaker, Mimi Crown, author of “Stuck in Traffic.”
Filmed on five continents, in a dozen countries, “Not My Life” takes viewers into a world where millions of children are exploited, every day, through an astonishing array of practices including forced labor, domestic servitude, begging, sex tourism, sexual violence and child soldiering.
The film’s director, Academy Award nominee, Robert Bilheimer, said, “Human traffickers are earning billions of dollars on the backs and in the beds of our children and yet no one knows this is happening. We have a huge responsibility, right now, to learn the truth and act on it.”
“Stuck in Traffic” is a book about a young woman’s journey to an unknown place to live as a human sex slave. Mimi Crown will speak about her experience and the story she shares in her book.
Human trafficking has increased over 25 percent since 2016 in Louisiana, according to a news release from the St. Landry-Evangeline Sexual Assault Center.
The free event is made possible by the St. Landry-Evangeline Sexual Assault Center, Melville Woman’s Club, St. Landry Parish Government, the Office for Victims of Crime and the SLEAT Task Force.
The screening is free but due to the limited seating at the Delta Grand Theatre, reservations are requested by emailing slesac@yahoo.com or calling 337-585-4673 to secure tickets.
